Yet another variation of steel

I seem to recall Martin making monel strings in the 60's. Monel is a proprietary nickel/copper alloy that is mostly nickel, and even looks like nickel, having that same dull, silvery-green appearance when oxidised.

Acoustically, I can't remember what it sounds like. I recall it being marketed as a longer-lived alternative to tinned steel strings, but I'm not really sure.

Gibson made Monel® acoustic guitar strings from the '30s though somewhere around the '90s. I think Gibson was first, but there were lots of others, including Martin, who used the stuff too. Like pure nickel strings, Monel strings are for people who want their strings to sound "dead" right away. (Well, not quite as dead as pure nickel, but dead-ish.) They're popular with bluegrass and old-timey types.
