Just about every guitar player learns to tune initially by matching the note of each string at the fifth fret with the note of the string under it. In other words, the fifth fret is equal to the next open string. But in today's exclusive Lifestyle lesson from Arlen Roth, you're going to learn all about the open string being equal to the next string at the seventh fret.

The positions Roth will show you today are exclusive to the keys of E, A and D, and are sometimes referred to as "drone" licks. These licks can lead to many, many interesting rhythm and lead patterns, and they have been used extensively in the funk, country and rock and roll genres.

Roth explains how to create some cool "gallop" patterns using these licks, and also shows their use in various fingerpicking and flatpicking styles.
