Just as important as this week's previous lessons on the 7th chord positions were, today's exclusive lesson from Arlen Roth focuses on another very important chord position — the 9th chord.

 

For many new players just starting out and listening to old blues records, the 9th chord positions are usually one of the first positions learned. This was certainly true for Arlen Roth, who started out listening to the likes of Mike Bloomfield and T-Bone Walker — two players who utilized many different variations of these unique positions.

 

In today's exclusive lesson, Roth demonstrates how to use a variety of 9th chord positions in both rhythm and lead applications. He also shows some of the melodic "extensions" that exist above and beyond the positions, and how to effectively utilize the vast number of picking patterns that are appropriate for all 9th chord positions.
