Depends on your preferences, go with the finish and hardware you want because there is no right or wrong neck shape or size, only what you prefer. Personally I love the 50s neck and I still have enough room to  reach around & use my thumb over the top for bass notes when playing some lead - but again neck shape is a personal preference, it’s a bit like asking “which girl should I date?” At the end of the day it’s down to what you’re looking for

    Thanks so much! 🙂

The 60s neck is perfect. It has some meat to it, but it's.... Hell, the entire guitar is perfect. You won't regret getting it.

Just keep in mind that the pickups come set ridiculously high... IMO they need to be lowered quite a lot. Do that, and it's just... heaven.

Wow thats really great to hear! thank you!

Yes... Its not stupidly thin but much better (for me) than a 50s neck.  But then sometimes what they call a 50s neck isnt as big as you would think..  The problem is as you said.. You really need to try them first as they are hand finished so all slightly different. But yes.. If you have smaller hands its probably a good bet that a 60s neck will be a better fit for you.. Some 50s necks are so big they are known as baseball bat necks...

You want the 60s neck if you have small hands.

Thank you, appreciate it 🙂 I saw thye 59 had a narrower neck at the nut , so was not sure.

the 60s neck is not very thin? just not as thick as the others but has some meat to it?

    Thanks again for your reply!

  5. Deciding which to get, I think I like the 60's standard Unburst... Can anyone please let me know what your thoughts are on this guitar? the neck?

I realize I need to play them but I have to order at Sweetwaters who are great, but hoping to pck the right on in 1 shot :)

Also any thoughts on this 60s vs the 50's? or a 59, though i only see custom on 59's? sound? I know necks are different, and love your thoughts,

I have hands n the small size.

    Thank you!

The ES 335 is generally considered to have the fuller (richer?) sound. I think its its simply down to the amount of air in the chamber. I have a ES 339 and remember being surprised at how much it still sounds like a hollowbody despite the small acoustic chamber. But there is a commonality to the sound. They both sound good.

I also thought the ES 335 was too big, but that is for gigging. If I were to just use it at home or studio, I would be more attracted to the ES 335. TBH, if it were a housebound guitar I would more likely go full hollowbody than semi-hollow anyway. No feedback to worry about at home.

Pickups: Not familiar with the T-types. I have 57 Classics on both my Gibsons. Yes, likely to be a sound difference there.

Handling: If you spend much time at the upper part of the fretboard (I do) the 335 might suit better. The reason is that the ES 339 shape is a scaled down version of the larger bodied guitar. That means the cutaways are smaller so they are tighter & more restrictive  when reaching for the top frets (by comparison).

Thanks so much for this! 🙂

I had a 339 and I have a 335.  Those two particular guitars have roughly the same size neck.  "Rounded C."  The 335 has more bottom end and isn't quite as snappy as the 339.  339 has a little more top end.  They both have that plywood sound at high volume.

    Thanks so much

Can’t really say without playing them both, but most likely there will be notable differences in tone between the two models due to body size - and neck profiles can be a moving target from year to year & model to model, so that also is a tough question to answer.

Perhaps you can pick the brain of someone at Sweetwater if they’re willing to do an in-hand demo of both instruments for you.

Best of luck in finding one that’s satisfying!

    Thank you

  9. Im about to purchase one of these guitars, and I would like replace the tuners with locking tuners that look like the ones on the 335

    https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ES35F00SCNH--gibson-es-335-figured-sixties-cherry

Does anyone know if thats possible and what recommendations please? I love the Gotoh 510 locking tuners on my other guitars, though they have a different look, but open to suggestions

It does not change the sound of guitar?

    Thanks to all!

  10. Ill be purchasing one of these and love the sound of the ES 335, but its so big so I was thinking of getting an ES 339, and was wondering since i cant play them as no-one has them

Is the neck exact same as an ES 335? Love that neck , radius, nut width, neck shape etc on the es 335

The pickups I think are  different so sound would also be?

Is it very different in sound?

These are the 2 Im looking at:
