I had a guitar that had a strong perfume odor when I got it. The smell came from the area that has the most contact with the player - the bass side of the lower bout. The case smelled strongly in the same area too. I tried wiping the guitar with naphtha. I tried baking soda. I tried ground coffee. I tried airing out the guitar and case outdoors. After three years, the smell was less than when I first got the guitar. But it was definitely still there. Very happily, I ended up trading that guitar for my current favorite player.
In several of the posts above, an ozone generator was suggested. That seems to be the tactic most people recommend when reading threads on this topic. It would have been my next step had I kept the guitar.

Wouldn’t mind getting a look at what we’re talking about. Are there photos somewhere?

Strung for a righty, but pick guarded for a lefty?
Also, thanks for the photo hosting tip!

Mods just delete. This forum sucks.
Well this thread sure took a turn toward sour.
On a positive note, I was playing my 2015 J-35 just last night and thinking man this thing kicks a$$. Absolutely love mine.

Hello BK3x7,
The forum works fine for me on my iPad. I’m not a tech wiz but here are some suggestions in escalating order…..
1) log out of the forum and then log back in
2) turn off your iPad, let rest w power off for a few minutes and then reboot
3) update iOS - 16.4.1 is most current (I’m still running 15.6 and I’m having no problems)
4) delete cookies in Safari - Gibson website will forget you and you’ll need to re-establish yourself on forum (Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data - then put “Gibson’ in search bar to find Gibson cookie(s) - tap/hold cookie entry and swipe left - reveals delete option)

OP hasn’t been here since he posted the question on March 28

I was watching. I knew it was pointless to throw in a bid at $5,000. I hope we hear more about this guitar down the road

Seems like you got a pretty good deal on your J-150. A quick check on reverb shows 4 listings widely separated in price. I’ve linked two of the listings in the $3.5k range - both of these posted less than a week ago. Enjoy your jumbo!

Thanks for pasting the photos. I couldn’t figure out how to do it in the OP.

The headstock does look like this 1934 Jumbo.

What a mess. Can anyone confirm this is a J-35 as per the listing?

Nice! Glad to help close the loop. I remember this bc I was a fan of the Masterbuilt strings and bought a bunch of packs while they were still available.

Here’s a good summary posted on AGF. Some grade A sleuthing re: Gibson Masterbuilt and GHS strings. Mentions different colored ball ends (for Em7).

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you end up with the Dove? Did you meet him in Denver or was it a long distance deal with him shipping it out to you in Mississippi?
It’s a nice guitar if you can make peace with the neck width. I looked in my notes and it measured 1.74” at the nut - pretty standard Bozeman. Good luck with your sale.
-
Yes, January 2023.
-
I acquired the Dove in 2018 off Reverb from a guy in Atlanta. I liked the guitar. It could sound really good sometimes but I never really connected with it. I traded it to guy in Denver in January along with a J-185 for a J-50.
-
That looks like my old Dove. By any chance did you acquire it from the Denver area?
-
That was outstanding. Really good video too.

Was just curious about the specs on his. I have a “1962 J-160E” built in 2016. Mine is two years later than his and called something slightly different. Mine has ladder bracing, plywood top and adjustable saddle.
-
Congratulations on your J-160E. The Fuller listing is a bit sparse on specs. Is your 1960’s model ladder braced with plywood top and P90? Also, nice 180 there too.

My 2016 J-160E 1962 has a COA.

Haha, maybe by the time I have 12.3k posts I’ll have figured out how not to shout

It was rokdog49 on the AGF forum that did the research. I just posted the link. Here it is again……
