  1. Ok I know this is for Hummingbird owners, but I am looking at one on eBay. If any of you would take a look at this one,in my opinion the price is right so far ,but the guitar looks a little beat up.Need a knowledgeable eye to give opinion,so this seemed like the right place to come .

    Link to ebay ::::http://ebay.to/1Uj1A9j

Don't sweat it, pappy, you're welcome here if you like birds.

The bridge and saddle look pretty messed up; looks like it might have been removed and replaced. But, then, compare it with this one (1963) which is for sale for $5500 more and you'll see the same crack:

Guitar dater project lists the date of your guitar:

    1. This result is a match only if the serial number is impressed on headstock and stamped on headstock Your guitar was made at the

    Kalamazoo Plant, MI, USA

    in 1964

    Production Number: 163765

A rough bird, but the price reflects it.

I'd buy it simply because the shipping is only $2.64 and you'll be getting a steal to have it shipped USPS First Class for only $2.64. (It'll probably look like kindling when you get it, but, hey, the shipping was a bargain.)

  2. I cant play. I mean I can do the most basic trial-by-error stuff, but I could use some resource help.

    Resources is it?

Buy this book. Seriously. Money back guarantee to have you playing blues in minutes.

Then watch this guy's videos. (I know he's an Aussie but Flatbaroque or BK777 can translate for you.)

Finally, if you've really got the blues, buy one of these. I dare you. It costs less than a new guitar.

    Hope this helps Sal.

  3. Check out this discussion. I think we might have been talking about your guitar in some of the later posts. Hogeye knows all about this period as his posts in the thread show. Maybe he'll chime in here to clarify.

    J-180/Everly post

I think we may be talking about your guitar in posts 19 and 20 of that link. (edit: we're definitely talking about your guitar there.)

Could you please post pictures of your guitar? We'd love to see them (both the Gibson and the Steinegger). And sound samples would be icing on the cake....

    Thanks!

  4. nezhawolter,

Welcome to the forum. Nice to have you aboard.

Just curious, nezhawolter, but I was wondering, do you ever feel like the woman in the green sweater?

    highfive.gif

I'll vote for DR Sunbeams too.

  5.

For the same reason, I don't like cryptic music. I still don't fully understand American Pie (but most of it)....

Don't feel bad. I heard a radio interview with Don McLean several months after American Pie came out. He stated then that the words didn't mean anything he just strung them together.

  6. Which Elvis J-200?

[#7 of 250 and previously played by Melbourne musician Fergus McAlpin. (Maybe Flatbaroque, EuroAussie, or BluesKing 777 can tell you who that is....)]

    Black or Sunburst?

    elvis+dove.JPG

Here's a great link on the Elvis Doves and on the difference between Doves and Hummingbirds.

I can tell you that I started searching ebay for an epiphone EJ-200 a couple of years ago and now the price is at least double what it was back then.

If you check out the recent thread here on the forum you'll see that the real Elvis J-200 was recently played on British television by Elvis Costello in the company of Priscilla Presley. Makes me wonder if they're shopping it in preparation for auctioning it.

So, if it does go to auction the price of a Gibson repro might go up as well. Don't know, maybe someone here has an opinion. (Clapton's Martin from the Unplugged concert sold for about $950k. Somewhere around that time Martin started selling a non limited edition Clapton acoustic which is still being sold by them for around $3k.) It's possible that if the Elvis J-200 goes to auction Gibson might start another run of the collectors' model. What will that do to the price of the original run of 250? And what they'll price the new ones at is anyone's guess.

If he reads this, Hogeye would be a great source of info on what Gibson has historically done. Dave F and MP are both collectors so you should heed their information.

And by the way, Welcome to the Forum!

  7. I would say though my '42 J-50 is King of the Hill when it comes to resorting to a burst to cover flaws. If you recall this is the guitar on which that somebody accidentally flip flopped one of the book matched top halves. Somewhere down the line somebody caught it and decided to shoot a burst on the guitar to try and cover up the screw up. So in the end it is either a very unique J-50 or one of the first or maybe the first J-45 (as the J-50s were shipped before the J-45s).

I always enjoy hearing the story of your J-50/45. I believe you wrote once that the error was pointed out to you by someone on another forum?

At the end of the day though straight as opposed to wavy grain is all about aesthetics. It has nothing to do with sound.

Thanks for reminding us of this, Zomby. Too easy to get caught up in minutiae and ignore what the guitar sounds like.

  8. hi,

i have also an ES 165 Herb Ellis and i love it.

    Emiliano,

    Welcome to the forum.

All the way from Rome, huh? Glad to have you here.

Thanks for posting the photos of your LG-2. Very nice guitar.

  9. I use DR Sunbeams, 12-54 gauge. I've settled on these after having tried a few different sets, including Gibson Masterbuilts, D'Addario EJ-16s, and Martin SPs.

I find the Sunbeams to be very warm and also very flexible (bouncy/bendy). They also sound very good right after you've installed them, not the typical brassy/harsh sound you sometimes get with new strings. The string life is pretty good as well .

Agree with everything you said. I switched from the Masterbuilts after they changed the packaging and apparently the maker. They began sounding horribly brassy out of the box and took a couple of days to settle in. Then they sounded very good, tho.

The DR Sumbeams sound great shortly after I put them on and stay that way for quite awhile. Plus I can go up to 13's easily because they are not as stiff as other strings.

I've been meaning to try the Pyramids because they have received great reviews as well.

Coated strings? Nah, my chemistry seems to destroy them very quickly. Don't know why.

Thomastik Infeld Spectrums? Maybe the best sounding of the lot but they're very stiff and very thick so 13's will barely fit through the bridge hole and are very hard to bend. And at $24 per set discounted I think I'll pass.

  10. A big fancy camera like that and you manage photo your own reflection .

    Honestly BK.

    :-s

Actually, BBG, the guitar's back is made of the extremely rare Antipodal Paparazzi Wagga Wagga Mahogany. I thought only Maton was using it, however.

BK, excellent music once again. And the sharpness of your pictures is astounding. I know you've posted it before, but what camera/lens set up are you using?

    Thanks for posting,

  11. Hello everyone,

I'm a bluegrass picker from KY, go figure! Play a 1992 Gibson Advanced Jumbo custom Ren Ferguson model. Would be interested in knowing the history of my guitar if anyone can help. The serial # is 90522023.

    Thanks,

    Lester

Hey, Lester, welcome to the forum.

You'll want to repost this in the Acoustic forum where the acoustic guys hang out. There are plenty of really knowledgeable folks there to help you.

And if you can, please post pictures (and a sound bite?). I'd love to see what that guitar is all about.

  12. No, yhe OP was from Gibsonnewby. Same guitar, but without issue, sounds like.

Ooohhh. Now I get it. I'm a bit distracted; I've been trying to find some Chanel No. 5 to spray on my guitar like BBG said.

LPguitarman! Sorry! Congrats on your new guitar! eusa_clap.gifeusa_clap.gifeusa_clap.gif

Glad to hear it doesn't have any problems.

Why don't you start a new NGD thread so you can get a proper welcome from all the guitar rats here? Pix and a sound file would be welcome.
