Each string stretches by a different amount when fretted at the various frets. To correct for this, the vibrating length of the bass strings must be terminated slightly further from from the nut than that of the treble strings. Since each string is unique in its response, the overall bias of the bridge is refined by allowing individual adjustment of the length of each.
