Customized Dot vs. Riviera

So on the endless quest for that perfect guitar sound I've decided I need a semi-hollow with single coil pickups and a frequensator tail piece. Most people are going to say get the Nick Valensi Riviera but that's not an option for a couple of reasons. I'm thinking of buying a Dot and installing P-94's and switching the tailpiece to a frequensator. Will this get me near that Riviera sound?

As far as playability goes, I've played a Dot but not a Riviera, are there any huge differences to playability or sound where it would be worth it to buy a used Riviera and route bigger holes for P-94's?

This is what you want to do my friend:

A. Get a casino

B. Get a dot and customize it

I have a dot with humbucker sized GFS mean 90's, and it gives me a sound quite similar to how nick valensi sounds. GFS Mean 90's are cheap, single coil, and schould give you what you want. Or you can spend more and get the P94's in a dot, then it would essentially be the Valensi model.

As far as a frequensator tailpiece, you can do it but it would mostly just be for looks. Plus a lot of people here would agree that you'd be loosing sustain on your guitar.

The Riviera's neck/fretboard width is slimmer toward the nut than a Dot's would be. This is a significant, but subtle difference in playability. I prefer the Riviera's 1 11/16" neck to the wider 335 neck.

So, buy the guitar that feels best to you. The p'up swap to P94s should make a Dot sound indistinguishable from the Valensi. But nothing is ever going to make a neck play better if you don't like the way it feels in the first place.

Good luck & post pics when you lay down that cash!

Thanks for the replys guys.

As for the frequensator being just for looks, does it not pull the 3 thicker strings tighter giving them a more trebley sound and shorten the 3 higher strings giving them a slightly bassier tone?

And since you mention the casino, I played one at my local shop and I liked the way it sounded a lot, but I often hear people talking about how much it feeds back. Is there truth to the feedback? Because I'll be gigging this guitar quite often.
