TommyK Posted January 22, 2011 Share Posted January 22, 2011 My SIL is a formidable mechanic in the US Army. He has a 1995 Chevrolet Suburban with diesel motor. He and the truck are in Germany. His alternator is bad and replacing it is expensive. I asked why he didn't just rebuild it himself. He said that GM has made the alternators nigh on to impossible to repair. He inquired with a local rebuilder who shot him a somewhat princely sum to rebuild, then they asked the year of the truck. "'95," he told them. "Oooh.. we won't touch it," was their replay. What have they done to alternators. I've 'rebuilt' alternators in the past with a set of brushes $11.00, and or a new Diode trio... not much more. What gives?
