TV Robot
So I'm considering purchasing an Epiphone Wilshire Pro and switching out the pickups. I'm looking at a couple of different pickups. First off I want to still be able to split the pickups if I want, so I'm only considering 4 wire pickups. Pickups being considered: Lollar Mini-Hum - http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LGP&Product_Code=239&Category_Code=humbucker-pickups Lollar Firebird - http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LGP&Product_Code=242&Category_Code=humbucker-pickups Seymour Duncan Sm-2 Mini Hum - http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/specialized/progressive/sm2_custom_mini/ Seymour Duncan Sm-3 Mini Hum - http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/specialized/progressive/sm3_seymourized/ Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Firebird - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Seymour-Duncan-Antiquity-II-Firebird-H68346-i1643577.gc Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Mini Hum - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Seymour-Duncan-Antiquity-II-Adjustable-Mini-Humbucker-H68340-i1643578.gc DiMarzio Mini Humbucker (have to navigate the site a little to get to it) - http://www.dimarzio.com/site/#/pickups/ The Lollars are real pricey (if I get 2 they'll cost more than the guitar). Opinions? Also if anyone owns the Lollar Mini-hums please tell me they dont sound like the audio clips on their website (in the link). I've heard them other places and they sound much better but I just would like confirmation for additional piece of mind.

stein
i would consider not splitting the pups, for 2 reasons. one is that the firebird pups are already on the bright side (that is kinda the appeal for them-and i big reason poeple go for the firebird) and the 2nd is that you will have more choices and better overall tone if you concentrate on what you want the axe to sound like in the first place. there is a case to be made that too many switches and wires kill tone. switching options can never really be optimal, there is always a comprimise. for example, the soung of a split coil will never be as good as the sound of a single coil. it really only ever gives options in addition to an optimal sound you already supposedly have. and agian, in the case of a firebird, any switching option of splitting the coils is going to give a brighter and thinner tone, which the firebird already is. it may be a case of sacrificing tone or options of pups to give you the ability to have a switch on the axe which you wouldn't use.
