epiphone expert six bass

Hi all,

I purchased an epiphone expert six back in 1995, and I really didn't know what I was buying. I just wanted to have a six string bass at my disposal to record with. I am trying to find out some information about this bass and keep hitting a wall. I know mine was made in the samick plant in korea in 1994 and that is about it. How many were made of this particular model. I have never seen another one in any music store in my area. I brought it in to a luthier friend of mine and he said it was a fake because Epi didn't make a six string bass. He was wrong. If anyone has any more information about this instrument and help would be appreciated. It was a limited run guitar, but it plays and sounds so nice im surprised they didn't make more of them.

I have an Expert-6. Great bass, but a little too heavy to play all the time. There really isnt that much info on them unfortunately. According the the Epiphone catalogues, they were made until 1998. But every Expert-6 that I have seen has been a 1994 model. I recently read that only 1000 of them were made, but I dont know how true it is. I suppose that it is possible that they were all made in 1994 but stayed in the catalogues until they were gone. I'm fairly certain they were slow sellers. Most people dont play 6-string basses, and a new, experimental Epi model with a $1000 MSRP price tag is a little too much for most people.

The obvious specs on these are: Ash body, 3-piece quartersawn maple neck-thru, 2 active jazz pickups, 1 vol. 1 tone, 1 pickup blend and 1 boost, two truss rods and rosewood fingerboard with top-dot inlays.

Another thing I've read (and again, I dont know how true it is) is that the electronics and pre-amp were prototypes put only in the Expert-6 basses. I know that they are much better than the electronics in both of my EBMs (Expert-6 sister bass). The pickups sound nicer too.

I've also heard a claim that there was an American-made run of these. I dont belive this claim, but I think the confusion stems from a few basses that went to Gibson Nashville post-production/pre-delivery, that had EMG humbuckers & pre-amp installed at the Gibson plant by special order. I have seen evidence of one of these basses a few years ago on my local craigslist. I have a pic somewhere. This bass was a 1994 model as well.

Thats about all I know about them...that I can think of at the moment. Here is some basic spec info on them and the EBM & EM series.
