  1. Okay… AvoId isn’t the right word. Perhaps, I meant to say… Are there particular eras in which a closer examination of an instrument might be needed?

Did the acoustic guitars from Gibson fall from grace during the Norlin years like their electric brethren did?  Are there things to look out for when considering an instrument made during that time period? What are some things you like about these guitars? Things you don’t like?

And finally… Do you think these are as good, better or inferior to the guitars made in Bozeman these days?

    Thanks!

  2. It sounds like the Banner LG-2 is a nice instrument! The neck might be a good fit. While I appreciate that recommendation… I just can’t afford that price tag. If I could a vintage LG-2 would be in consideration as well. And as I noted in my original post, I’m just not in that financial situation. The $2-3k range is much more realistic. That being the case… how does the 50’s LG-2 (Original series) compare? Is that a fuller neck profile than the L-00? Similar to the Banner LG-2?

I absolutely cannot stand the slim taper necks. Prolonged playing of one of these gives me cramps. They dont seem bad at first, but i have ended up selling off any gibson with a slim taper that ive bought.

My 51 LG2 neck is not huge, but it has just the right amount of thickness. The discontinued Gibson J35 was pretty nice. And the 50s original J45 is also good.

Im glad we got these at least. But i hate that i cant even think about getting a standard gibson because the profile just doesnt work for me.

I get that too. Slim taper necks feel kinda nice for short periods of time but cause cramps in short order. A bigger neck feels good at the start of a playing session and much better even after a long gig.

I can relate as I too can dig a chunkier neck, also because I like to use my thumb for forming chords. What you may seek in spirit from Gibson is a so-called "Vintage 50s" neck most prominently featured on a Les Paul Special - TV Yellow and perhaps other models as well. Such a neck leaves no space between your fretting hand and the neck and is more on the extreme side but very comfortable. In general I don't think you will have a particular problem there with any Gibson acoustic as their necks are chunky, and wide at the nut, no matter what. Gibson acoustic necks are also rather varied even among the wide-spread "Slim Taper" (C-shape) family.  The so-called "Historic V" neck of the 50s LG-2 might be a good fit for you regardless (and also guitar-wise).

Excellent! I’ve got my eyes on an LG-2 as well as the L-00. The L-00 I tried sounded quite nice and while the neck wasn’t bad necessarily I’d certainly prefer more mass on there. I haven’t tried an LG-2 yet but now I’d really like to pick one up for a test drive! I also a have a bit of interest in a vintage LG-1. Different bracing I know but I wonder if it’s neck would be similar to the LG-2.

  5. I suppose I should be more specific when I say a “chunky” neck. I’m mostly referring to the carve or profile. Obviously nut width and radius are factors as well but I’m looking for something that fills my palm a bit more than the typical slim taper or low oval.

  6. It appears to me that most acoustic guitars today come with either a slim taper (Gibson) or a low oval (Martin) type of neck shape. I totally get that from a business sense. I’m sure the major manufacturers know what neck shape sells the best and build the majority of their instruments accordingly. However, I’ve got long skinny fingers and just like a fuller neck. I’m never even opposed to the baseball bat necks we often talk about. Granted, it’s not necessary to have a neck quite that big but I’d prefer it over these skinny little ones on the wall at most music stores. Obviously I could spend a lot more money and custom order something that fits my hand better but I’m just not in that tax bracket. Vintage guitars often have beefier necks it seems. But once again, I’m not in that tax bracket. $2500-3000 is a feasible budget for my next guitar though. Can anyone tell me of a 00 sized guitar that has a chunky neck? I like em thicc.

    Hey everyone,

thanks for the advice. I ended up getting a Gibson L-00 Original (Ebony), which was the best sounding when I tried Standard, Studio and Original...or maybe I just loved the vintage tuners 🙂

anyway i'm sure I'll love this little guitar!

Congrats on the new guitar! I’m currently in the market for a 00 guitar too. I played a current L-00 Standard this morning at a big box retail store. It sounded quite nice and the fit and finish looked right to me. The slim taper neck is a bit thin for my long fingers but still reasonably comfortable. I’m really interested in the Original model you have. I think I just like aesthetics a little more than the Standard.

So far, what are your feelings on the new guitar? How many did you try before settling on the one you got?

  8. Hey Everyone. I’m researching 00 guitars and keep seeing YouTube reviews of a model called the L-00TV (true vintage). Is this the same thing as the L-00 Original that’s currently in production? Then I also hear about something called a Legend. What’s going on here?

    Thanks!

    Hi everyone,

    I currently own a Gibson J-15 and a J-45

I would like to know anyone's opinion on whether to get an L-00 for a "different" sound (given that both my guitars have similar specs but different woods), or would it be waste of money?

    thank you!

I’m thinking about an L-00 too. But which one? Are you leaning towards an Original, Standard or Studio?

  10. Hey all. I’m in the market for a 00 sized guitar and have a few models on the radar… all are fairly different in build from one another and at different price points. When it comes to Gibsons I like the L-00 Original but could do without the electronics. I’m a bit of a traditionalist I guess. The Standard also looks nice but those bulky tuners just don’t do it for me. I suppose electronics could be removed and tuners swapped. My local big box music stores don’t have either in stock. So trying em out isn’t possible at the moment. Has anyone owned or played both variations and can compare? I’m not entirely sure the difference besides the electronics and tuners.

    Thanks!
