  1. ..thanks for the feedback guys.. unfortunately, I didn't buy any guitars this weekend. I did audition the SG Standard and the used LP Studio with my amp.. I didn't like the SG as well during this audition.. and, although the used LP didn't "wow" me, I did like it better than the SG. Unexpectedly, the LP had been set-up with ultra heavy strings for drop-tunings.. the closest I could get it to Concert Pitch was a half-step down [and the strings were too tight].. this was probably the deal-breaker for me.. wish I could have heard it with stock gauge strings at Concert Pitch. ..the search continues... -Corey
  2. ..my decision just got a little more difficult.. just talked to the local shop manager.. he's dropped the price of the SG Standard to $1095!! ..I'm just gonna audition it and the LP Studio tomorrow.. see which one I can't live without. ..but ..a new SG Standard for $1095.. wow... Hopefully, I can post pics of a new Gibson on Monday.. we'll see what the weekend holds... [i've posted this Reply on my SG thread too] -Corey

  4. ..great tips, gizeh68.. I'm bringing my whole tool-bag [haha]. I do plan to give it a thorough look.. in addition to checking pots, string buzz, and pups, I'm anxious to see how the guitar 'feels' in my hands.. I'm hoping it's nice and weighty. I don't have issues with heavy guitars.. the heavier, the better. Being a 2007 Studio, is the body 'chambered' for weight-relief or not? Thanks...
  5. ..thanks for all of the input guys.. looks like the Standard gets the vote. I understand that some guys like the Special, but with the Standard's re-sale value and being down in price right now.. it looks like the best choice... Here's "the rub".. if any of you have checked my new thread on the LP forum, you know that a local guy is offering me his LP Studio for a killer price.. if it's as pristine as he says, I can not pass it up.. ..if this deal doesn't work out, I'll be planning for the SG Standard again. I'm auditioning the LP on Saturday. -Corey
  6. ..thanks for your input, guys.. if the guitar is as nice as advertised, and it rocks with my amp, I'm not gonna pass it up. I'll shop for an SG later on... ..plan to audition with my amp on Saturday.. I'm bringing a few input tubes, because they make a huge difference with my Class A amp.. the 12AU7 Mullard is my current favorite [cause I like Power tube overdrive, with less Preamp overdrive].. then a GE 5751.. all NOS, of course. Any other neat ideas for conducting a successful audition are welcome. -Corey
  7. ..I know I've switched gears Jantha.. but this LP deal looks great. I've made contact and have an appointment to check it out.. I will audition it with my amp.
  8. Hey Les Paul guys.. I'm new.. just joined the forum because I wanted to study up for an SG purchase.. I played a SG Standard in a local shop and loved it... BUT, I have a new dilemma.. a surprising opportunity. A guy just posted a gently used Les Paul Studio on my local Craigslist page at a greeeaat price. It's a 2007 model.. Ebony with Chrome hardware, Original HSC, etc... Here's the questions... Is everyone happy with their LP Studio.. especially circa '07 models?.. are there any concerns for buying these guitars used?... -Corey
  9. ZenKen's post on 05/02 was hilarious.. haha... ...
  10. I'm no veteran, but it looks like a decent price to me.. ..if you get to inspect and audition it before purchase, it could turn out to be a good "second" guitar...

    Necks

..the fatter, the better... my USACG Tele has a full 1" thickness... ..the SG Standard that I'm considering [in a local shop] feels good with the 50's neck...
  12. ..I figured that'd be the first response.. thanks Dom_JEM.. ..I'm leaning toward the Standard.. just wanted to get the general consensus here. If I need to upgrade pups and buy a case, might just as well buy the Standard.. ..don't know anything about the Quick-Connect Wiring thing.. any feedback on that, anyone?..
  13. ..new guy here.. been a hobbyist player for 15 years.. traded lots of gear... The other day, I auditioned a SG Standard and was really impressed. I've been doing some research on the web [Gibson's site, Musician's Friend, etc..] and, I'm considering these three price-points; SG Standard - $1199 @ MF [w/ HSC] SG Special - $999 @ MF [w/ Gig Bag] SG Special Faded - $699 @ MF [w/ Gig Bag] ..looks like the Standard is cheaper now than anytime in the past couple of years.. I remember seeing them on MF for $1499 before. Probably the best value for a "number one" guitar, eh?.. ..the Special is the same guitar, but cosmetically stripped and sporting a 490T bridge pup?.. if a 498T was installed, would the Special be sonically the same as the Standard? [The pup upgrade and a HSC would raise the cost above the Standard's cost] ..the Faded looks the same as the Special, but with the obvious differences in the finish.. sonically the same?.. Are there any known issues with the current production SGs at these price-points? Anyone have a bad experience with shipping on a new SG?.. Thanks for any opinions/advice..
