  1. Good point. That's the kind of thing to which I was referring.
  2. I agree with what many of you have said about this, and I have no particular axe to grind (pun on another thread active at this moment) about supporting Big Jim Sullivan. I also know that there are many signature models out there related to guitarists/bassists with whom only a particular segment of Epiphone buyers (for example) familiar. I think that this is the norm, actually. Heavy metal fans are far more likely to be familiar with a semi-famous shredder, than are jazz fans, and so on. Ironically, Big Jim Sullivan is one of that small cadre of British session guitarists who influenced much of the non- 'Group' U.K. music scene in the 60's, with some of the others being: Joe Moretti, Jimmy Page, John McGlaughlin, and Vick Flick. Interesting to read your opinions.
  3. If the photo and my monitor are anything to go by, then that's a very nice colour. It looks like the areas outside the f holes are almost orange in colour, fading to a deeper orange/tobacco, whereas my MIC Casino is much more yellow to black. I love both, so....can I have yours to add to my collection ;)
  4. Last night, I read an interview with Big Jim Sullivan (British session great in the 60s, playing on over 1000 charting hit singles, and many more non charting ones). In the interview, Sullivan said that he would really love to have a signature guitar. Even though the interview was done a few years ago (early 2000's, I think), I'm not aware of any signature guitar of his, and thought that it would be a great thing for Epiphone to acknowledge and honour Sullivan by bringing out such a guitar. What do people here think?
  5. This is an interesting question. I suppose I fall somewhere between the points of view expressed above. On the one hand, I was interested in getting a Casino because The Beatles played them, and I liked the tone and the look. On the other hand, I also like to - subtly, I hope - show a certain kind of allegiance or preference for the band, so I suppose that played a minor role in my choice. Having said that, if the guitar had 'The Beatles' printed on it anywhere, no matter how small and unobtrusive, I would not buy it - that would be enough to make me shudder. And I find most of the Apple (Beatles, of course) endorsed products to be aesthetically hideous. Similarly, I won't buy or wear clothes which have logos on them, if I can help it, or unless I can see how to make short work of a label/tag with a razor blade right after I get the purchase home. I just don't like advertizing, unless I think that the product is exceptional. (Don't mind having guitar makers' logos on my guitars, but I also won't buy tote bags and other 'accessories' promoting the names of the guitar makers).
  6. Hi Steven, I'm not sure if people here are saying that hearing about someone famous who plays Epis validates their choice of guitar, but we're more likely to be aware of somebody famous who plays Epi's, than we are, say, to know that our neighbour does so. Having said that, I'm sure that it would have taken me a lot longer to try an Epi than it did if I didn't love The Beatles. And I'm really impressed with the guitar because of the range of sounds it produces (not because it makes me look or sound like The Fabs). Also, all of this provides us with yet another reason/excuse to talk about Epi's :-({|=/ Quick non-related question. I tried to insert a smiley at the end of my message above, but regardless of whether I click on the smiley, or click on the image link and then put the smiley between the two parts of the link, it just displays as text. I know that my video card is O.K. because the smiley box is displaying fine on my screen, as is the smiley in Steven's message. Any ideas what's going on?
  7. I had the same dilemma with my Casino, and also whether or not to go with a 'regular' Casino or an Elitist. My solution was to buy a sunburst 'regular' Casino now, with a promise to myself to later buy a natural Elitist. If I felt I could have afforded two Elitists, I would have made that route. I didn't think I was going to like the sunburst Casino as much as I do, so I feel that I'm now left with another dilemma - do I sell my regular Casino, and, after all, buy two Elitists - one natural and one sunburst?
  8. I can't believe the number of different tones that I can get using my Roland Cube 30's controls and amp emulations, combined with either my Casino, Les Paul or Ibanez (strat-like copy). Having said that, I can never get exactly what I want, but would say that I get 85-90% of the way there. I never use the Danelectro distortion pedal or DOD (can't remember the number) multi effects unit I bought about 10 years ago. Strangely enough, though, around about that time 10 years ago I was able to combine these two and go directly into an 8 track MiniDisk player and get exactly the guitar sound I had heard in my head for the previous 14 years. Never used them again because they sound terrible independently.
  9. I just don't like slang at all. I use very little of it, so "axe", or any other slang term, is very unappealing to me.
  10. I'm sure 100 years ago Britons might have said this about the British Empire, too, but the fact remains that life is politics. Trying to separate the two is like trying to differentiate between lead and rhythm guitar - to paraphrase Keith Richards (not often worth doing, but I think he was spot on here). He said something like, "I'm a guitarist and I play guitar".
  11. My MIC (in May 2008) Casino looks exactly like cookieman's. I was in two minds about whether or not to get the natural (blonde) Casino (and will later buy that in the Elitist range), and was worried that I wouldn't like the sunburst. But I love it. In fact, I'm having a bit of separation anxiety about letting the guitar go back to the store I bought it for a set-up. I noticed last night that the machine heads have 'Epi' on them - not sure if that means that they're Epiphone's own tuners or that they're Grovers. I have not been impressed with the machine heads.
  12. McCartney sometimes uses his Casino on stage nowadays, too.
  13. *A* DVD is available, i.e. non-'official' DVD. If you look, you can find it easily, and it's well worth a view (or twenty!). The rooftop concert is just fantastic. George, in particular, plays fantastically, despite not wanting to be there, according to all reports (and the lack of a smile on his face).
  14. So sorry to hear about your experience, and I wish you all the best. Isn't there some form of double boxing that can be done to minimize the risk of damage when shipping? By this I mean would it be possible to put the hardshell case (containing the guitar) inside another, bigger case/container, packed appropriately? I know that this would increase the size, weight and expense of shipping, but surely it's worth it.
  15. My Roland Cube 30 is fantastic, but a little loud for my apartment (neighbours), so I use headphones a lot when playing it there. slag, I know that you had problem with your Roland Cube 30 and you were speculating it was because it had a two pronged plug (possible here in N. America with older appliances, usually). Mine has a three pronged plug (i.e. it has a ground/earth) and I have had no problems.
  16. My Casino was made in China in May 2008 at the Qingdao factory (probably misspelling that as I'm doing it from memory). Guitardater.com gave me that information.
  17. I've noticed that it's much more difficult to hand mute the strings with my picking hand on my Casino than on any other of my guitars. Does anyone know if the angle of the strings relative to the fretboard is significantly different on Casinos than on other guitars? I have an LP Standard, Ibanez strat copy, and 3 acoustics, and they are all much more similar to each other in this respect than the Casino.
  18. My MIC Casino (which I got just over a month ago) came with a fantastic action, and great frets (no dressing needed). The intonation needs doing, and the machine heads need to be changed. But otherwise, it's been fantastic.
