I drooled over the original 61 SG (cherry) when it hung in the window of the guitar shop where I took lessons. It was next to the SG Jr. that I was fortunate to have my parents buy for me. Over the years I thought about buying one and  just never quite got there. When the recent versions began to be produces, I thought about either the Gibson USA version or the Custom Shop version. The poorly performing vibrato just haunted me to the point I couldn't pull the trigger. I wound up getting a CS Les Paul Axcess Bengal Burst. I'm getting good at twanging the strings on the neck. Can't do the lower twang, but at least the guitar stays in tune. Good Luck. It is a BEAUTIFUL guitar.

I wish I could've seen those '61s new! As the story goes, nobody really expects anything to be worth a lot of money in the future. Eventually, they just become used guitars, and sometimes, worth a small fortune. At least you got a nice Jr.!

It's unfortunate that the vibrola unit just isn't reliable, or stable. It's a very cool design. I'd like to do some Hank Marvin vibrola stuff with Apache, but it just never goes back to pitch. I haven't touched the bar since the first time that I bought the guitar, it's been alright. I thought about just removing the bar entirely, but I haven't.

Those CS Les Paul Axcess' are very nice; especially the Bengal Burst. I have an SG Diablo Tremolo, and I've been waiting for them to do another SG with a floating floyd rose. Tuning stability is most of the battle for me. Thanks, and thanks!

I’m having exactly the same issue, with the other 60th Anniversary model (the cherry 1961 Standard)

the vibrato sticks, requires a fair amount of force to operate, and there’s no neutral position for it to return to.

@IOMMIdid you ever find a solution for this? I’m considering trying some oil but I’m not sure which moving part needs the attention

I think you have to do some major work on it to get it to function, sort of, alright. I just tried to place the bar in a position of how it looked whenever I bought it, tuned it up, and left it alone. I've never messed with it since. I haven't had any tuning issues since. The spring tensioner bolts might have something to do with it, but I'm not brave enough to mess with them. I'd like it to function well, so that I could use it for some Hank Marvin, and The Shadows stuff.

Could be mainly a problem with the pickup selector switch.  If you leave the guitar in the case with the switch either up or down it stresses the little plate in there, and it won't make good contact when the switch is in the middle position.  Easily corrected by removing the back plate for the selector switch and squeezing the switch plates to make better contact in the middle position.  Sounds like the pots need a good cleaning too which was covered above in other replies.

Thanks for the tips as well. Yeah. I never really thought about it before. I leave my guitar switch in the bridge, or neck position in the case. I appreciate the help!

Spray the switch contacts in the cavity. It should not affect the finish there. You can also unscrew the pots and spray them inside the cavity too an it will be away form the finish. I have no idea if contact cleaner is nitro friendly not much is. But crazy as it seems lighter fluid for Zippo's lighters is.

I'll take a look. Thanks. I know deoxit isn't very safe for the finish. Oopsies on that one once by a friend. Sounds like lighter fluid would be even more dangerous, but I guess not? Ha.

Anyway, I was messing around with the guitar just now. The pots makes noise mostly in the middle position(other positions rarely). I moved the switch very lightly in the middle position, and only the bridge volume turned on, and off the sound. Neck did nothing. I moved it again, and the middle position would only turn on with both volumes on. 🤔 lol. So, I guess it could be the switch contacts? I'll have to take a video of it.

That is unusual. They will be premium electrical components.

You can at least drop the switch out, clean the contacts and inspect the wiring.

Yeah. The guitar is definitely made of the best parts. I couldn't be happier with it.

Everything looks fine inside the control cavity. I'll take a look at cleaning the contacts on the switch, but I'd have no idea where to begin on that, or cleaning the pots(as to not damage the finish with cleaner).

    Thanks. :]

  6. Hi there. My 60th Anniversary 1961 Gibson Les Paul Custom(Polaris White) has developed some issues with the volume pots. I have never, with any guitar, had a problem like this. I am the original owner. Bought it new last April from Guitar Center.

The bridge volume pot started making that typical static sound that they do whenever they're dirty like a few months ago. Thought nothing of it. I just turn the knob till it goes away. Still happens every now, and then.

The neck volume has developed an issue where if I turn it exactly to zero, sometimes, it will put out a very loud ground buzz,  or a sound as if the guitar doesn't even have a guitar cable in the jack. If I keep turning the knob from zero to 10, and back to zero, it eventually stops. This has happened a couple of times now.

Tonight, the guitar has decided to develop a bad fizzing, and over distorted sound(when I play notes) as if the speaker in my amp is blown, which it is not. This particular issue is very apparent when the toggle switch is set to the middle position.

I do not abuse this guitar, or subject it to harsh environments. I play it at home, wipe it off after playing, and put it back in the case.

Hi there. I bought this guitar, new, about 4 months ago, and my pickup rings are starting to bend up pretty badly. Guitar isn't around extreme temp changes, and is put in the case after playing. Is this a case of over tightened screws from the factory, or? I've never had an SG's pickup rings warp, or bend. Thinking about sending it in for warranty repairs; if that's something the warranty even covers. :]

  8. Hi again. :] I took my SG Diablo Tremolo in for repairs. Original cap was broken in the process, so big sad, honest.

Anyway, I took it in for a buzzing issue. Touch metal, buzz becomes less noticeable. Tech says he doesn't think that there's a ground issue. He ran a continuity test from pot to pot to bridge, etc. I was recommended to buy new pots, a new switch, and an input jack in short.

The volume, and tone pot do crackle when you turn them as well, and they were cleaned.

Now, I really don't want to have to go replacing all of the other original parts all willy nilly, as they say, until the problem is fixed. Lol.

Isn't there an easier way to diagnose the issue? If not, I guess I'll buy everything mentioned above.

    Thanks!

Gibsons tend to be setup with approximately .022uf or .047uf capacitors wether they are small Wafer, Fat, Oil or 8umblebees

You could get a bag of them from an electronic store and experiment.

Note that when they are setup in the traditional way to the tone pot (between one terminal and ground on the tone pot) , when tone is on 10 they are not doing anything until you start to crank the tone down a bit.

I gotcha. I bought like 48 new ones. Couldn't buy just one. Lol. Yeah. I've been told that, so some people were wondering how the tone could change that much between a small ceramic cap to an orange drop. Just two different tolerance levels, really. Tone went from quacky to tightened. Tone change was dramatic.

  10. Looks pretty legit to me. Fret nibs on it. Headstock looks legit; as does the neck pitch. I don't think you'd get that kind of back on a Chibson. It's way too nice.  I'd say you got a pretty dang good deal on it. Hard to find any Custom Shop model for 2k.

I'm no expert on anything but SGs. However, like I said, it looks pretty legit to me. Custom Shop for your first Gibson is pretty good. Lol.

  11. Hi! I have a Gibson SG Diablo Tremolo. It was all original till last week. The original capacitor was broken. It read on the top line... 223 and the bottom E5M. On the other side, the top line read 105, and the bottom CC. I have no idea what the capacitance is, or the tolerance. I imagine 223 is 0.022, and the M is 20+-%, and 5 is 50V. Who knows. I cannot find the exact cap.

They used these caps in the 2012 SG Diablo Premium, and the SG Diablo Tremolo. Some were blue; some were orangish yellow. They also used Bourns 500k MINI pots.

The tech put in a 223J orange drop cap. The old quacky tone that I used to have is gone. Completely changed the tone. Sounds tight. Don't like it now.

I can't find exact replacements like the original one, but I'm having something similar to the original put in soon. They're a little bit bigger, because they're 100V, and not 50V. I'm not sure why Gibson used these weird small ceramic caps on this limited run, or where they even got em from.

I don't care about which cap is better, or what's an upgrade; I need help identifying, and making sure I've read everything correctly. lol. I like originality. Don't mean to sound like a gear snob.

I'll supply a link with pictures of the old cap vs the new vs the one that's going in next.

First pic - left is original. Right is one that's in it now.

Second pic - top is original. Bottom is replacement.

Third pic - top is new cap. Bottom is original.

1 no magic on posting pictures here, get yourself a public imaging site like imgur.com and past/post the jpg link.

2 don't get mad but there's a reason why guitars with "standard " transmissions have been a frustration to many guitarists that they've blocked the tremo

Good luck; but now you know how to post pictures for the vibrolo experts to see

I'll do this.  I have imgur. Thanks. I was thinking of just blocking the vibrola, but I'm hoping to make it usable. Thanks again. :]

Sounds as if your guitar needs a good set-up.   And the vibrato needs oil or vaseline to loosen it up a bit.

There is currently another forum member experiencing the same problem -

I was afraid of this. The dreadful vibrola setup. It plays well, but yeah, I bet the vibrola needs attention. Thanks. I'll go look. :]

  14. Hi again. It's me. Lol. SORRY for the huge story that's about to begin.

Today, I bring forth another question, because I need a genuine answer. I've added an imgur link. You can see the difference of the bar locations, where it rests. I've had this guitar for almost 2 months now. Yes, I know the best way to set one of these units up is to remove them. Roflmao.

I'm starting to go, slightly, insane with this vibrola unit(that I don't even use because I want to stay in pitch for as long as possible.) I've heard the horror stories.

What is the neutral position for one of these? It doesn't ever reset position. Are these really push/pull units to reset the position of it to neutral? To pitch? You push the bar up, sharp. You pull it, flat.

I did a bend on the treble e once, without the vibrola, on the 15th fret, and it made all of the strings just fret out... everywhere. I had to move the vibrola up, and down to fix the issue. This unit requires force to use.

The nut appears to be cut pretty well. Overall, it's a very nice piece. I'm just having weird issues when not even using the bar. LOL?

Another issue I have is... when you do use the sideways vibrola, it never comes back down into pitch. You have to pull it back down till it comes back into pitch. I've never used it dramatically. Just a slight wiggle, and unless I,  manually, move the sideways bar into a position where the strings are back in pitch, the bar will just stay there. Are these really push/pull units?

I assumed it would be, you move the vibrola unit, and it would just reset itself. I know this is how the Maestro/Lyre Vibrolas work. You can move the bar up, or down, not dramatically, and the pitch will reset itself. Is mine defective(more so than the others? Lol!)

My apologies for the ridiculous read. I wish I could show everyone what I mean. I thought these units would be SORT OF usable, or that they wouldn't just do weird things to your strings when playing without using it. Frets out, sometimes, if you bend a string too far with your finger. Roflmao? When you use it, you have to retune like 5 times, because it'll just keep going out without using it.

I do love this guitar, and I love my SG Diablo as well. I'm just seeking some guidance. I don't want to remove it. I just want to know why it's being weird, and requiring a little bit of force to use. Should I contact Gibson about it?

    Thanks.

Just spray your arms with Deep Woods OFF bug spray if you want to keep your finish hazy..

This is no joke.  I played an outdoor gig one night in a low lying area and at dusk the mosquitoes were killer.  At the break we sprayed ourselves down (and part of our shirts in the process) with OFF.  When I got home that night and took my guitar out to clean it up the back really looked bad - all hazy and smudged from the bug spray that was on my shirt.  It took a lot of cleaning and polishing over several weeks to get it back to looking the way it should.

As far as restoring a VOS finish I have no idea.  I would want the back of the neck of my guitar to be smooth and easy to move up and down on.  But maybe the OP is more concerned with appearance than playability?  And that is not a knock, he may just want to keep the guitar as original as possible.  At the opposite end of the spectrum we have had people on this forum polish the heck out of satin finish guitars to make them shiny.  To each his own.

Yeah. I was concerned with the fact that maybe I ruined the originality of the finish, or something. I've owned a lot of Gibson SGs over the years; this is my first Custom Shop. Still have my 50th Anniversary Diablo Tremolo.

This was my first VOS experience, and as I've read here,  in the replies, it's just one of those things that if you play it, it just isn't going to stay hazy forever. Kinda like the satin guitars as you've said. I owned a 2007 week 10 SG 3, and as I played it, that flat satin feeling became shinier.  I thought, perhaps, I goofed the finish.

Yes, I kept sticking to the guitar neck, and that wasn't too enjoyable. I just like to clean my guitars with the cloth after every session. The place where my arm rests is now shinier, too.

So, with all of that said, I think it's just similar to the satin finish. The more you play it, the less it will stick. I do appreciate the replies, and the humor. :]

  16. I have a question about the VOS finish. I bought this guitar about a month, or so ago. First VOS Gibson. It's a 60th Anniversary SG Custom. I may or may not have, accidentally, fudged the VOS finish to a gloss on the neck. It's super smooth now. 🤦‍♂️ Is there any way to restore that sticky VOS finish on the neck?

Lol. I wipe down my Gibson guitars, pretty well, after every practice, and there wasn't an Owner's Manual with mine, or anything to indicate like... DO NOT VIGOROUSLY WIPE DOWN A VOS FINISH TO CLEAN IT. Roflmao.

Guitar Center is well know for having that sort of stuff missing.  They take a lot of polish cloths and multi-tools out of Gibsons as well.  Just one more reason not to buy from them.  As long as you have the COA that is the main thing if you ever want to resell the guitar.

Yeah. I've heard bad stories; even from 10 years ago about stuff like this happening. I figured I might as well. They were the only ones with it in stock at the time. zZounds sold theirs the day I was going to buy one. Never had a problem from them.

I have everything important; COA/Checklist, etc. Just was trying to get a couple of the other minor things missing; like the owner's manual.

  18. 3 hours ago, Fish Crumpet said:

Probably Guitar Center. The missing items are probably stuffed in the pocket of a Squier gigbag somewhere. I doubt Gibson would send it out without those things.

Bit of a drag that they didn't get back to you though. That's also atypical.

You're probably right. I've heard things like this happen before. I'm just not sure how, or why Guitar Center would remove some things, forget to put them back in, or just take them. LOL.

Yeah. I'll probably just have to keep calling.

  19. Hi there, everyone. I bought this new 60th Anniversary '61 Gibson Les Paul SG Custom from Guitar Center. The seal was broken, and about four weeks ago(when I got the guitar), I called Gibson to see if I could get the following items that I'm missing. They said they'd call me back. Never did.

After three weeks, I called a second time. I said, again, I'm missing the vintage tone circuit card, the white owner's manual, and another paper that just says the model, and serial; not the checklist.(Shown in the pictures below from another.) They told me to email them a picture, and that they'd call me back after they looked at the email. Again, I received no call back, or an email.

Am I just out of luck on getting these three items? I paid cash for the guitar. I really love this guitar.  My guitar was used as the stock photos on Guitar Center's website.

    Thanks~. :]

  20. I had a question about what the red marker numbers mean on some of the pots, pickups, and bottoms of the toggle switches. What do they indicate? Both of my mini pots are marked with a red 7. I've seen the toggle switches marked with a red number before as well. Maybe it's common sense. 😂😂😂🤷‍♂️
