  1. Curious if there is a resource Stew-Mac etc... that can get legit 'low wide' frets. The kind you see on those old jazz boxes.

I am quite partial to old school low wide frets. Considering replacing some fretwire on an old Les Paul with that low wide, but I want to be sure that I can get the right stuff. Any information is greatly appreciated. thanks!

  2. Merry Christmas Everybody!

Might be going on a guitar safari within a few days. friend of a friend of a friend has a couple Byrdlands. I'm intrigued. A Norlin era, and to be honest, I love the Norlin era frets. and they actually feel good.

Anybody here wanna talk about their Byrdland? The experience with the Byrd? I have smaller hands so the small scale is appealing to me. Talk to me about the Byrds!

I have had a love/hate relationship with archtops all my life. I can't remember how many I have owned, including L-7s, which are supposed to be just plainer L-5s. Nothing made me happy. A couple years ago I bought a 1947 sunburst non cutaway L-5 (see my profile pic). I paid less than market value because it had actually been used.

I've owned it for a couple years and it has spent most of it's time with me in the case, tucked away in a closet, unplayed, until recently.

I went through the standard rite of passage of finding the right strings for it. My first bit of advice to you is to ignore what anyone tells you about strings. Everyone on the planet had me convinced that all archtops need tow cables for strings. Forum rules forbid me from the expletive that I would like to type. I even fell into that trap, putting a set of 14-59 on it and going a brief period thinking I was "right" along with the "experts". Add another expletive here.

Ditto for action. Unless you envision yourself pounding the strings with a 50 cent piece, go with what is comfortable. Don't let them tell you the strings need to be 1/4" off the board to get proper sound from an archtop.

There are people out there that think every Les Paul should be paired with a Marshall amp that goes up to 11. The L5 has it's own "people" who know best.

Lately I have been playing the L-5 pretty much exclusively. To say that it has grown on me in a very short time is an understatement. I have it strung with 12-52 John Pearse something or others, and the action is low.  I can't explain the sound I'm getting other than it sounds like a good humbuckered jazz box except there's nothing plugged in.

I've always tried to play like Merle Travis, and it seems like when I try on this guitar, I can pull it off. I don't know whether it's just a frame of mind I have when I play it or if we're just a good match. I'm not going to question it. I play more lately than I have in a long, long time.

Mine has been used. A lot. Most "L5 guys" would turn their noses up at it because they like stuff pristine. This tells me more about their personality traits than their particular taste in guitars.

In addition to it not having any finish left on the back of the neck. it also wore a DeArmond pickup for a long time, so there are screw hole sin the side of the neck and a jack hole in the rim. The pickguard is a very good repro. I have no idea where the bridge came from but it works. One tuner has been replaced with an exact replacement other than it's a lot more shiny. There have been two strap buttons installed in the heel and both holes have been filled. It was refretted and the board planed. They did a flawless job other than they sanded one corner of one of the block inlays off.

It is not mint. But apparently someone thought it was a great guitar and played hell out of it.  It's in it's original red line case and it fills the air with musty funk when I open it up. If they would bottle that scent, I would use it as after shave.MnOy974.jpg

thank you for the images. those are some amazing guitars. I hope to have one just like that.

I was at a guitar show in Dallas ages ago (remember those?) and they actually had air fresheners that had 'old case' scent!

thank you for those amazing images!

  4. Leslie West was a hell of a guitar player. An incredible sound, a presence that said "I don't give a **** what you think about me.... I'll kick your ***"

Leslie West was rock & roll. Condolences to his family and all who loved the music.

    2020 sucks even more now.

How much is an L-5 worth to you,  what are you willing to pay for one?

that's a fair question. obviously that depends on its condition, how it feels in my hands, how it sounds to my ears, how original, etc.

I don't have to have a museum piece, but I don't want to spend thousands for an instrument that has drastic modifications or issues with the structural bracing, neck issues, aftermarket tailpiece and so on.

Archtop guitar heaven.  But you probably knew that already.

    [cool]

oh yeah. i've got their number. but I'm a lil ways to go from their prices. but I am getting there.

they seem t have the market cornered with their merchandise and reputation. After careful thought when planning this journey, When the time comes to make a decision on what guitar to buy, I was going to buy in person. After playing and deciding on how it feels in my hands.

this isn't going to be a catch & release, I plan on finding the guitar of my dreams for keeps.

  7. I've always thought that a 40s L5 is a truly magnificent guitar. Finding one that has been taken care of, has been an adventure. There are several makers that make non cutaway archtops that are infinitely more affordable, that i could buy and not be afraid to play and take out. But there really is something about the big sound that only comes from a well seasoned axe.

I've actually been saving for one for the past year. Patiently putting away some cash from every paycheck. I'm making some progress it feels good.

What is your dream guitar? How long did you wait to get it?

    • Thanks 1
  8. Take some deep breaths my friend. I'm in your corner. If you are certain you want to return the guitar, be prepared for a slow fight. You must be patient, but you are going to win so long as you don't lose your cool. And you have to be direct in your communication that you want to send it back from the start. They are banking on drawing it out past the 30 day return policy. They will try to discount, or placate you in some way before they accept a return, and then the money being refunded will take "4 to five business days" before it is refunded."

you have 30 days to return the item. Communicate via writing, but if you are sure you don't want it. Stick to the course. Retailers are bleeding money right now. They are going to look for a multitude of ways to keep from having to give money back.

You have nothing to lose here, only they do. I had a situation similar, and the waiting is excruciating, but stay calm. Hold them to the letter on their return policy.

    Good luck.

I still have one of those too, but it always seemed to make everything quieter...the 'anti-boost!'...I'm sure that was my fault somehow though [laugh]

So I'm confused... the DS-1 quieted your sound? Or the OS-2.

My way of dialing it it, is play the amp clean until it naturally begins to show some grit. Engage pedal (in my case OS-2) then switch until they are the same loudness whether pedal is off or on, then kinda tweak the dials until i find my personal golden place. I don't need much, but I like having some punch without running the risk of getting evicted from my apartment.

also, this Origin 20 has 3 modes on it. Its surprisingly loud. I feel that I finally earned a good tube amp. I have been playing a tiny Roland Cube for several years! I did a lot of weddings with it etc. I even played a huge hotel ballroom with it. (just ran a cable from the line out into the house DI). But I came across a very lightly used Marshall and for all the great things about it... they really don't tell you that you're gonna need something extra to get those sounds that Marshall is known for.

  10. At the last minute I saw a BOSS OS-2.  Second hand, but practically brand spankin new. I think it will work for my needs. I had  a DS-1 back in the day, and it was reliable and sturdy. BOSS makes some good stuff.

     Thanks for the suggestions.

  11. So i picked up an origin 20 today. This amp is F'kin loud.  That's the easy part. However I am searching for something to give me a nice sweet push into the grit.

An overdrive? Not much exposure with pedals as I've always played clean, but I am open to suggestions. Thanks everyone.1798815005_I1RkqFawRVGTuqZdd9Yrw_thumb_585.thumb.jpg.6cd08ba27831b5588e091e11ec7a64ce.jpg

  12. did gibson in the 80s or 90s ever make les paul studios with a solid one piece maple top?  (not including the Studio Lites)

My 'new  to me' 1992 LP studio that i acquired to replace my #1 (also from 1992)  is a 3 piece top. The only way I knew this, was by  looking at the guitar in certain light, I could see a faint seam in an otherwise perfect finish.  I never knew or cared that my #1 LP studio was 2 piece/3 piece. Didn't matter. It was a Les Paul ,and from my father, and played like a slice of heaven.

Just curious if there might have been a few that were made  with a one piece top.

  13. Hi Deeman. You have a point. I actually found on a music listing site we all know and love (where I spend way too much time).... another LP Studio and according to the SN the 3rd-5th digits indicate that their 92 studio was made the same day as my #1!!

The only thing is, this seller wants about 1000 and its a brown top & black back & sides. Mine is entirely black. Ebony board.

It gives me pause. talk to me!

POST SCRIPT... the studio made the same day as mine... is only 2 hours away
