Harris
Greetings! First time post. I really like what I’ve seen of the board so far. I need some advice. I recently bought an Epi Les Paul Jr from Craigslist. I’m really impressed by this guitar. It’s probably the most bang for the buck I’ve gotten for a guitar. The guy who owned it before me installed a Gibson dog-eared P-90 over the humbucker route. The action on this guitar is sweet and the tailpiece can’t be lowered at all. However, the strings are, in my opinion too far off the pickup. I have not taken any measurements, but the space in between the pickup and strings is more substantial than I would like and it is obvious that I'm losing some output. I just can’t imagine how far off they would be in the humbucker was still there; as the p-90 makes up for quite a bit of space on it’s own. I’m wondering if anyone has considered this an issue? Is there some solution that I might be overlooking? I’m considering cutting a 1/8” pickup-shaped hardwood shim/spacer to install underneath the pickup. Versatile
Dog Ears are usually fixed height... As a comparison, some Casinos have fixed P/U's resulting in the bridge P/U being much lower than the neck The ES330, virtually identical in design, usually has a shimmed bridge P/U to bring it up to equal height... So 'shim on' is the way to go Or consider one of the many height adjustable Soapbars... V
Harris
Thanks! I really appreciate your reply...that is sort of what I figured, but good to know that others have shimmed a pickup to address this problem.
tweed2
Check with a few suppliers or on eBay. There are hard rubber and plastic spacers from 1/16" to 1/4" available . And most are are the same size and shape as your pickup. Lollar sells them, too. Great way to go. I had to add them on my Zephyr Blues Deluxe and my Casino, when I changed pickups from stock. Not all P-90s are created equal.
