Explorer Neck worn down to wood

Recommended Posts

(Re-post from Explorer category, sorry I'm a noob and didnt see this category before!)

Hey all, I'm new to the forum, looks like a great corner of the web. I have an '83 explorer-my favorite (and right now only)guitar. The neck was a little worn when I got it, but over the last 12 years I've put some mileage on it. The back of the neck is worn down to the wood. Through the finish, even through the red stain. I love the character, but the playability has gotten noticibly different. My hand kinda sticks to the neck if I'm not careful. Can I do anything to help this? Is there an oil I can just rub into the neck to help make things smooth again? Can I/should I get it refinished? I'd like to retain the worn look if possible. I tried uploading a picture, but it was too big and I'm not savvy enough to make it smaller. Thanks!
