simont Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I was wondering if anyone knows how to access the onboard 4 band parametric EQ.? thanks
elantric Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 i understand a future editor will enable user control of this EQ.
simont Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 Surely not? I thought it was an ONBOARD 4 band parametric EQ. Would'nt that mean we need a computer to EQ the onboard PIEZO???
elantric Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Yes - The Parametric IS onboard and from the guitar we are able to program it - see pages 18 - 19 Function 21 thru 24
simont Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 from this thread http://forums.gibson.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=10677 Switch on/off Powertune==================== When you pull the MCK Powertune starts up and depending on your setup the Tuning Mode, Chameleon Mode or Main Menu is activated. Additional the tone capacitor is deactivated, which means that you can rotate the MCK without changing the tone. This feature is necessary to be able to step through the different coil settings in Chameleon Mode without changing the tone. When you push down the MCK the tone capacitor is activated again and Powertune shuts down. But there is one exception! Powertune remains active when the PEQ or the Piezo signal is present AND you rotate the MCK to LED-Peg. When you push down the MCK at this position the PEQ and Piezo signal remain active. The tone knob feels like a regular knob (without clicks) and the tone capacitor is activated again. Roundup If you want to shut down Powertune, turn MCK to any other position than LED-Peg and push MCK. If you want to play with active electronics (PEQ and/or Piezo) rotate MCK to LED-Peg and push MCK. Tronical You play. We tune. This seems to infer that we DO have onboard access to the Parametric EQ?
elantric Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 "A Dark Fire with a prototype parametric EQ board mounted on the back." http://www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Blogs/dark-fire--the-inside-story/December-2008/like-no-guitar-ive-imagined.aspx This EQ circuit is a last minute implementation on current Dark Fire control PC board with Date code "4908" = 49th week of 2008 (see under the battery) inside the control cavity of your Dark Fire guitar. "From Anderton's Blog: "The Chameleon Tone Technology consists of two four-band EQ chips within the guitar, which have presets for particular guitar sounds, but in theory users will be able to program their own sounds as well." Features subject to change without notice
simont Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 Cool. I cant quite read the writing though. I wonder if it tells you how to adjust the PEQ on the Piezo pickup sound while playing the Dark Fire !
simont Posted December 24, 2008 Author Posted December 24, 2008 Seriously though........ in light of these quoted comments from Tronical and the Gibson product page, maybe we CAN in fact tweak the PEQ and the peizo sound without the need for a GUI editor. Would one of you lucky folks who have a DF would be kind enough to try the following:- 1. enable equalized piezo signal.. rotate MCK to LED-I to adust the Piezo signal. You can toggle between - no piezo = LED-I blinks red - regular piezo signal = LED-I blinks green - equalized piezo signal = LED-I blinks blue 2. enable acitve electronics.... Powertune remains active when the PEQ or the Piezo signal is present AND you rotate the MCK to LED-Peg. When you push down the MCK at this position the PEQ and Piezo signal remain active. The tone knob feels like a regular knob (without clicks) and the tone capacitor is activated again.Roundup If you want to shut down Powertune, turn MCK to any other position than LED-Peg and push MCK. If you want to play with active electronics (PEQ and/or Piezo) rotate MCK to LED-Peg and push MCK. As I read it, you should now be able to tweak the EQ using the tone knobs. Now rotate the pickup selector toggle switch to blend in 100% acoustic sound (no traditional pickups). The Dark Fire also gives you the ability to adjust and blend the acoustic sound from the piezo bridge pickup with the sound from the guitar's traditional pickups. It does this by utilizing a revolutionary rotary potentiometer which is part of the pickup selector toggle switch. By twisting the switch's head clockwise or counterclockwise, you can blend the piezo acoustic sound from zero percent acoustic sound (100 percent traditional pickups) to 100 percent acoustic sound (no traditional pickups). can you still tweak the PEQ using the tone knobs? cheers Simon
elantric Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 The only onboard PEQ adjustment appears to simply be - "on" or "off" i would love to be wrong, but sadly it seems the stereo PEQ's controls of "Gain", "Q", "Bandwidth" can't be changed by the user .
elantric Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 As a reminder, here's a typical stereo 4 band PEQ with all its controls: Where are the MCK user adjustment of the stereo PEQ controls for "Gain", "Q", "Bandwidth"? see pages 18 - 19 of the Gibson Dark Fire Owner's Manual Refer to Functions 21 thru 24 From the Dark Fire Press releases : "From Anderton's Blog: "The Chameleon Tone Technology consists of two four-band EQ chips within the guitar, which have presets for particular guitar sounds, but in theory users will be able to program their own sounds as well." EDIT: I guess the PEQ plays a big part of these Factory Chameleon Tone presets - LED-E = Gibson Classic - LED-A = Blues - LED-D = Funky - LED-G = Twang - LED-B = Acoustic - LED-e = L5 - LED-Arrows = Rock - LED-#b = Metal
simont Posted December 26, 2008 Author Posted December 26, 2008 Indeed. Makes the following quote from Mr Tronical incorrect. If you want to play with active electronics (PEQ and/or Piezo) rotate MCK to LED-Peg and push MCK Better let him know.....
elantric Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 "play with active electronics" = tweak one manipulable element - PEQ "On" or "Off"
elantric Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Here's how to program different EQ curves for the PEQ. We need the PEQ "CONFIGURATION TOOL" - which calculates the correct values for GainData, ConfigData within Functions 21 thru 24 This "CONFIGURATION TOOL" may possibly be a Lookup Table or a Spreadsheet with: * ConfigData values for Frequency Bandwidth and Q * GainData values for each EQ band's decibel level. Will this simply be an Excel Speadsheet or Lookup Table? Or something hosted at Gibson.com like this: http://designtools.analog.com/dtAPETWeb/dtAPETMain.aspx or ??? -- See pages 18-19 of the Dark Fire Manual: Function: 21 Name: PEQ Settings for left channel (Pickups) Purpose: Configure 4 Bank EQ for Pickups Factory Default: depends on Sound Clickstream: 21#CoilConfigNr#BandNr#ConfigData Configure the left channel, Band1 of PEG for Gibson Classic sound 21#0#1#16 You need the configuration tool which calculates the correct ConfigData. Function: 22 Name: PEQ Gain for left channel (Pickups) Purpose: Configure 4 PEQ Gain for Pickups Factory Default: depends on Sound Clickstream: 22#CoilConfigNr#BandNr#GainData Configure the left channel, Band1 Gain of PEG for Gibson Classic sound 22#0#1#0 You need the configuration tool which calculates the correct GainData Function: 23 Name: PEQ Settings for right channel (Piezo) Purpose: Configure 4 Bank EQ for Piezo Factory Default: depends on Sound Clickstream: 23#CoilConfigNr#BandNr#ConfigData Configure the right channel, Band1 of PEG for Gibson Classic sound 23#0#1#16 You need the configuration tool which calculates the correct ConfigData. Function: 24 Name: PEQ Gain for right channel (Piezo) Purpose: Configure 4 PEQ Gain for Piezo Factory Default: depends on Sound Clickstream: 24#CoilConfigNr#BandNr#GainData Configure the right channel, Band1 Gain of PEG for Gibson Classic sound 24#0#1#0 You need the configuration tool which calculates the correct GainData
