gotomsdos
Hi, folks ! I have a question, please. I find late 40s Gibson J-45s have vertical back braces but a late 40s SJ(Southern Jumbo) has no. Any specs/year laws with vintage J-45/SJ ? As the following pics:
TM
You are getting to be quite the expert on this era guitar. The SJ you pictured has a one piece back, no need for a joining piece. This does happen. Not sure why. I find that some/many of the early post war sunburst finished guitars have a rather thick finish. There are examples with wood and cloth side supports. tvguit
Most of these with the one piece back will still retain the vertical strips. The one pictured may have had them originally but they fell out. That's fairly common for those pieces to come unglued.

Has anyone determined if the 1or 2 piece back is related to the use of laminated wood?
tvguit
Has anyone determined if the 1or 2 piece back is related to the use of laminated wood? It isn't. Both are solid up until sometime in the 70s (at least on the J-45/50).
fredcapo
Did some quick research and it seems that Gibson did start to use laminates on some LG guitars possibly in the late 40's. Would seem to explain why the LG2 has vertical back strip (2 pc solid) and not the LG0/1 (1pc laminate)...
