Looking for advice about the 66 Worn Wilshire

So: I was looking for a cheap, versatile and good looking guitar when I found that beautiful Epiphone 1966 Worn Wilshire.

I like music of lots of different styles like: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Death, Behemoth, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Sepultura, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc.

Another thing: This will be my first eletric (I only have one acoustic) and I want some advise about the tone, versatility, balance (if its neck heavy), the constructon and about the guitar quality in general.

Thanks already (and sorry for the bad english)

I've had my '66 reissue Wilshire for almost five years and it has been a really good guitar. There have been no problems with the construction. In fact, I haven't yet found anything wrong at all. All the hardware is very good. No problems with the switch, controls, jack socket etc. The fret work is some of the best I've seen at any price, beautifully leveled and finished. Even the 'generic' tuners do their job without any problems, and it holds tuning at least as well as any other guitar I own. Setting it up from 'out of the box new' took around ten minutes and it hasn't needed anything since, apart from string changes. And no, it's not a neck heavy dive bomber.

The closest comparison in sound would be to an SG, because of the thin mahogany body, but it's not exactly like an SG. The pickups are not high output and you do need a bit more gain on the amps input for overdrive, or a pedal in between of course. Access to the top frets doesn't really get much better. Hitting top D is as easy as hitting any other note.

I've seen pictures of Hendrix with a Wilshire, but only with the earlier P90 equipped model. Johnny Winter used the '66 style batwing/mini hums model at times.

Whether it will do all the styles/sounds of the bands/players you mention is going to depend as much on the amp you use and your playing ability as the guitar. Clapton will be Clapton whatever he uses. Jimmy Page is Jimmy Page whether he's playing a Tele or a Les Paul. You can't get that 'quacky' position 2 & 4 Knopfler Strat sound, but then you won't get that from a Les Paul, SG or Casino either.

My own Wilshire is a well made, nice looking, nice sounding guitar. It's not my number one guitar but I wouldn't choose to be without it. Whether the sound/feel will be exactly what you need/want is something only you can decide. Many people love Strats, but, even though I own one, the Strat is not a guitar I ever developed a real liking for.

Sounds good, I think Ill order mine today :)

Another thing I was wondering: the default guitar strings are .09 or .10?

.10 I've stuck with that because lighter stings seem a bit slack and lack tone on a Gibson scale guitar (IMO). You shouldn't have any string bending problems on the Wilshire with a set of 10s.
