stlflyguy
My first post on this forum: I have an '81 Les Paul Standard with the Gold Top finish (serial # 81261529). Original with the exception of the tuners which have been changed to Grovers. Aside from that, the pickups are the regular size (not the mini humbuckers) and have the chrome covers. I've owned the guitar since '86 when I bought it for $350. Which pickups do I have? I'd prefer not to open up the electronics or unscrew any covers to find out. Thanks! tazzboy
My Guess would be the Tim Shaw PAF if they have the engrave pat # and an ink stamp number on the pickups.
ghesus
I believe they are 498T & 490R.
tazzboy
Those pickups didn't come out until the 1990's his guitar is from 1981
ghesus
My mistake. I was under the assumption that the 498T/490R's were a model number that was originally designed by Shaw then modified in the 90's. I'm here to learn.
tazzboy
No worry's. I don't know think Mr Shaw was working on back in the 1990's I have interview of him with Tonequest Magazine and think he had left the R&D and was VP.
starfoxhound
I think unscrewing the pickups and posting some pics would be the better way to know what pickups are there. I mean, if you bought it new, then the originals should be on, if bought it used it may have other PU's, right?
tazzboy
True. Next time you do string change just take the pickups out and snap a quick picture.

The LP you have is a Heritage Standard (made from '81-'83), and did come stock with Tim Shaw pickups.
