Hank T. Tone
Anyone here ever try putting medium or heavy gauge strings on a 336 for jazz playing? I think Gibson recommends light gauge, but a thicker gauge set of strings won't hurt the guitar, will it?
jmjohnson
Shouldn't hurt - just might need to tweak the set-up. It comes with 10s, as does my Gretsch hollow body - I put 11s on that just to get some more uumph out of it, and a bit more bow in the neck - plays fine. vincentw
I'd go with .011s first.
jazzlvr
I've been using flatwound 11's on mine for a few years and love it. For me it seemed like that guitar crys out for something heavier than 10's.
ricoblues
Gauge 011 are the better choice for my CS-336. I use DR Tite-Fit and now the bridge don't rattle anymore, it's ease to bend and the action is very low. It's a pleasure to play.
Versatile
Traditionally many jazz players used med/heavy strings on their archtops....13's and even 14's I've been there and had continual finger-tip skin peeling I now favour 10's for most things....and 11's and 9's for other stuff....
