Hi!

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me more about the value and quality of the Epiphone Broadways from the early and mid 80s since a guy in my area is offering one. The guitar is from Japan.

Thanks in advance [smile]

Broadway or Emperor??? There was a MIJ Emperor and a Emperor thinline in the early '80s:

Excellent guitars, I sold a full bodied one a couple of years ago, I sold it for just under $1000 USD. The thinlines are hard to come by, the few I've seen have sold in the $1500 range. Of course, a lot depends on the guitar's condition.

It's a Broadway Fullbody.

I was actually going to buy a new Broadway, which would be about 300 Euros less. But after seeing this, I'm not too sure which one to get.

Maybe someone could get me up to date on the general quality of the new ones as well :)

What do you guys think?

The new ones are OK, the early '80s Japanese models (made by Matsumoku) are superior. In fact, the one I had was the best jazz box I ever played.

As far as I know, they were never called Broadways, but maybe the European models were called Broadways. The script E on the headstock is typical of a Matsumoku, the label should look like this:

The serial # should have 7 digits like 3091234 where 3 indicates 1983, 09 equals September and 1234 is the production number.

Good luck

These were certainly known as Emperor's in England. I missed my chance to buy a new one in 1983 and I've only ever seen one used model for sale. That was sold for UK £950.00 some years back. I don't know if they are as good as a Gibson L5 but that is certainly what they seem to be modelled on. The same series Riviera I bought at the time was very nearly as good as the ES335 I already owned, maybe as good, I preferred it. At the risk of upsetting some folk I would say the model you're looking at is better than a current standard Epiphone and at least as good as the Elite models. Euro 950 equates to about £785.00, I'm tempted to go for it myself.
