Recommended Posts

OK, so i got an epi sg prophecy ex last week and i changed the strings after 2 days. With the old ones it had some buzz to it but nothing too bad. Now i have Daddario 009 and it sound horrible. 6th and 5th string sound like a trainwreck and the first one mutes itself out around the 5th fret. i tried to get the saddle a bit higher but still nothing. any suggestions?

Epiphone electrics come stock with 10's. You need to adjust the TR or use 10's. This should fix the noise.

This is true, EPIs come with .046 -.010 strings. I use .042 - .009s myself.

Putting lighter gauge strings on the git reduces the amount of "pull" the

strings exert on the neck, possibly allowing it to "BackBow" a bit. Your

description of the problem sounds like classic backbow, which CAN be corrected

by doing a Truss Rod adjustment, and setting the action of the strings.

Other factors CAN contribute to the problem, such as Nut slots too deep,

BUT out of the 8 gits I've owned over the last 2 years (including 4 EPIs),

I've never had that happen. Maybe just lucky?

(links to be posted in a bit).

Here are a couple of pics showing "BackBow". One is exaggerated, the second is more

realistic:

The SG needs to be "set up" to correct the adjustment problems. If you've never done it

yourself, take to local Luthier, and hopefully you'll be able to WATCH what he/she does.

Once you know how to do it yourself, odds are you'll never use Luthier again.

Here are some links that you can look over, both to learn about set-ups, and to "see"

what will be done to your guitar:

From Epiphone Lounge "Do-it-Yourself" Sticky/Thread. Click on link (or just go to Lounge),

scroll down to "***GUITAR SET-UP/TRUSS ROD ADJUSTMENT:" section, start clicking and reading.

There are 5 sub-sections that deal with Guitar Set-Ups.

Epi "DIY" link:

Hope this is useful.
