Jeff M.
I just picked up this Gibson from Sam Ash. It is stamped 987. There are only 3 digits inside. Any ideas?
tvguit
Judging from the teardrop guard (changed to larger one in '55), the 19 fret board (pre '55) and the block logo (post '48) it is probably between '48 and '55. But it is Gibson so who knows really! Look closely at the neck block inside for a letter. If there isn't one then it is possible it is pre '52. If there is a letter then: Z='52, Y='53, X='54. Good luck!
Jeff M.
Thanks. The 3 digits are very clean inside and nothing else. I really looked hard and there are no letters. I do not care what the guitar is worth. It is just amazing to imagine who has played this guitar before. This guitar could be before Elvis, Beatles, Led Zep and the internet! I am so glad to happy to have found this guitar.
tvguit
It looks like it is in great shape! The only issue I can see is the tuners. I think they should be 3 on a plate klusons with white buttons. Other than that it looks great. Congrats!
wayside
I don't know who told you it was an L-1 but it definitely is not. It's an LG-2 and 1948-55 would be correct. An L-
pfox14
Wayside is absolutely correct - NOT an L-1 at all. Gibson made the L-1 flat-top version from 1926-1942 (not counting reissues). Completely different body shape & size. Yours is definitely a late 40s LG-2.
jt
I suspect that the original poster accidentally omitted the "G" from LG-1. And, I'm not sure how anyone can conclude from that photo that the guitar is an LG-2 and not an LG-1.
