13Guitars
Is every Gibson Custom made in the Gibson Custom Shop? I have heard that you can have a "Les Paul Custom" that is just custom in name, and not in make. Is this true? If so....how can you tell the difference? Tim Plains
The LP Custom is a model - like the LP Studio or Standard. There's Gibson USA and Gibson Custom Shop, Custom Shop being the better of the two. The LP Custom became a Custom Shop guitar in 2004 (or 3. I never get the year right). Once they became Custom Shop guitars, their serial number format changed to begin with "CS". The ones before that had typical 8 digit Gibson serial numbers. Same guitar as before they became Custom Shop guitars (maple top, weight-relieved body, short neck tenon); the only difference is the ones made in the Custom Shop might be a little better in the quality department. By that, I mean better fretwork, etc. There are also Customs that are reissues of certain years. Those are different. Completely solid bodies, long neck tenon '50s have no maple top, '68s have a maple top.
