HAHAHAHA.....there must have been a LOT of trees around once, eh?

 

And then they somehow turned to oil....and shale....and coal.......!! when I let the weeds go in my yard, I don't get oil...... I get more weeds!

 

Well, yes, there were, and more grew when they fell down, then they fell down and more grew again and there where hundreds of thousands of generations.

 

Now then, I always thought oil came from trees but...

 

This thread made me do a quick Google and I found out this:-

 

Most scientists think oil started out as plankton and other tiny ocean critters, specifically their lipids, tough, stringy molecules that bacteria want to eat about as much as you enjoy dining on gristle or tendons. The idea is that, unlike the rest of the biological material, lipids don't get gobbled up by bacteria, instead falling out to the bottom of the ocean, where they're covered by millions of years of sediment and eventually become oil.

 

So I learned something today, which is nice!
