theboogins Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Trying to resurrect a "beater" SG that I acquired. 78 SG (White) had a neck broken off at the body but whoever re-glued the neck did a pretty nice job-looks like crap but actually stays in tune and plays great. Problem is the pickups don't sound like Gibson at all. Pulled them loose yesterday and from what I can gather they are something called tar backs (bottom is sort of a black semi-hard jell material) From looking around you either love these or hate em'. I'm in the latter category. I opened up the back cavity and showed them to a buddy of mine and he noticed that there were extra wires attached and sort of spliced in to the main wire and soldered to the back of the volume knob. No clue what that is all about and if that is the source of the lousy sounds. Dunno. Sort of planning to clip the extra wires see what difference it makes. I also have a set of 57' RI's that I may just drop in to see what happens. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks. JB
