Gibson USA v. Gibson Custom SG

I am currently considering purchasing an SG, but I am having difficulty in discerning the difference between a Gibson SG Standard or 61' RI as compared to a Gibson Custom SG Standard or Historic SG Reissue. Other than being hand built, what is the difference? And, is there a substantial enough difference to justify a nearly $2000 difference? I am also considering a Gibson Custom SG Special VOS for the P-90s. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The best thing for you to do is see if you can find any locally and play them. Standards mostly all have 2 or more piece bodies and thicker necks. '61RIs used to have 1 piece bodies but Gibson now also makes them with 2 pieces. Custom Shop SGs all have 1 piece bodies and (what is pre-screened as) better wood. If you want to buy Custom Shop, look for used. They pop up in the $2,000 range and take forever to sell. I have seen a few sell for as low as $1,500. Fantastic value for the money.
