sad57
Anybody have any info on the new, (well, they have been out for about 10 years now) Les Paul Jrs.? How do they stack up to the originals? I had one back in '68 - '69 - a double pickup, blond guitar. It was the sweetest sounding guitar I ever owned. Now I want to get another one. Not an original - too much money - but one of the custom models. OR - buy an Epiphone Les Paul Jr., and custom modify it myself. Add new pickup, hardware, etc. Any body out there have any experience with this?
GuitarJunkie
Technically, if it has two pickups it's a Special. Juniors only have one. You're in luck either way. The Custom Shop currently makes several V.O.S. Juniors and Specials. There's a '57 Junior single-cutaway in Sunburst http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/lespauls/57Junior_SC/1957Junior.html A '58 Junior single-cutaway in TV Yellow http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/lespauls/58Junior_DC/1958Junior.html A '60 Special single-cutaway in TV Yellow http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/lespauls/60Special_SC/1960SpecialSC.html And a '60 Special double-cutaway in TV Yellow http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/lespauls/60Special_DC/1960SpecialDC.html I've played the '60 single-cut and it was awesome. If I hadn't just recently picked up a couple other Gibsons, it would be hanging on my wall right now.

sad57
Thanks for the input. Is there any difference between "custom shop" and production models of Les Paul Jrs. and Specials? I see a big price difference on Ebay for used pieces - excluding the "real" ones from the 50s and 60s - and I wondered about that.
JohnnyCrash
Technically' date=' if it has two pickups it's a Special. Juniors only have one.[/quote'] This is a common misnomer. I, in fact, have a Les Paul Junior Lite that has TWO P-90s. The original old models may follow the 1 pickup = Junuior, 2 = Special name schemes - but they haven't really followed that since the old days. I'm not sure if Norlin era Gibsons was where the name fuzziness got started or what... I dumped my Epiphone Junior a few months after I got it. It just never stacked up well against my Gibson Junior, any of my Gibsons, or other guitars for that matter. Felt like a toy, had an insanely hot ceramic pickup, miles of poly lacquer, etc.
