  1. I see the price of a Gibson LP Modern Studio is now more than the price of the LP Classic I bought (new) three years ago.

You have to wonder when this will stop.

I could think of so many ways better to literally blow $400. Honestly could say the same about Gibson guitars too how people pay for the name, not actually needing to spend Gibson bucks on a perfectly playable guitar… people pay for the glitz and glam because we are enamored for some reason by flashy lights and blinky objects. Good thing about Gibsons is that if you turn them around and sell them you don’t take a bath on what you paid - if you know you got a good price. Why I buy used. I digress, not paying $400 for a 20’ cable. If I did, I would turn it in for the slightest perception I get of static in my amp if it were ever present. Hard pass.

Speaking of guitars, I often wonder how many people are priced out of the market as prices keep going up.   Two years ago I had my mind set to get another Gibson but it seems each time I check the price has gone up.    When production guitars start to reach the price of used cars,  something isn't quite right.

Hah -  not having read this, I commented on this on the "You know you're getting old" thread, simply because someone mentioned 'bubble gum cards' !    I think the Mantle cards go for $5M to double that.  I try not to think about it, knowing I had at least one.  Long gone now.

I've still got packs - unopened - that contain gum.    Late 70s, early 80s.

  4. It's an illusion.

Things are not priced to buy outright, things are priced to obtain through loans.   This started eons ago with homes, then we went to automobiles.  Now, it seems everything no matter the "price" can be obtained via taking on debt.

When I was younger, the thought of using a credit card hardly ever happened.   We carried them in case of emergency.   Now look at the 20 something year olds and the crap they buy.    I know college kids who have multiple credit cards, department store cards, some maxed out already.  (This is the same group for the most part that wants their student debt erased)

So, sellers continue to sell things at a higher price because the market/buyers cooperate and continue to pay.   Think about the car.   The question that dealers throw out is "what do you want your monthly payment to be?"   People take out 72 month loans now which is insane.

Reverb always has a "as low as XX month with Affirm" reminder.  I wonder how many go this route.   Imagine what would happen if there wasn't this option.   I make good money, but I'm not ever going to pay 5k for a guitar.   There are 100 other things I could or should purchase before that will give me a better value years from now.  So as there are more avenues for obtaining a guitar, the prices will continue to remain high, and continue to increase.    The "new" prices will then impact the perceived value of the used prices, and those selling will use that as some gauge.

It's nothing new that the prices of guitars on Reverb and other places are very high from what they originally cost. And Gibsons probably have the highest markup.

I bought an 2014 SGJ in 2014, for $480.  It was at the end of the year and they had lowered the price somwhat. I now see this exact same guitar going for $700-$1000 dollars on Reverb.

And I bought a Les Paul Studio in 2016 for $650. I see them all the time on Reverb for $800-$1400.

It just irritates me that so many people try to rip so many people off.  And yes, I know it's not new. But it just seems to be so bad nowadays.

I'm  really glad I bought those guitars new when I did.

Because I couldn't afford to buy them used today![smile]

I know.  There is a used LP Standard not far from me.  I looked at it in person over a month ago.  No mods, a few nics but nothing  noticeably bad.    They want  85% of "new" retail.   WTF would I pay that?   And I just checked, the guy still has it listed.

Our locally owned music store sometimes lists stuff on Reverb but it's rare.  I talked to the owner just today about guitar prices.   He said Reverb prices were generally high or flat out absurd, and it is getting more common.    He's got a Rickenbaker on consignment, but the guitar's owner set a price (based on Reverb research) that in the end won't help the guitar sell.    And 8 months later it's still hanging in there.    The other problem he mentioned is when people show up to trade something,  they want Reverb prices for their trade or believe the item is worth more than it is.     Then some get pissed off when they hear the offer.

Go look at the prices on Reverb's Gibson Demo shop.   I  should have just bought a bunch of Classics last year and flipped them this year.   LOL

My son is a lefty, but plays guitar as a righty, and he batted right handed when he played baseball as a kid.

Im right handed only because i write right handed.   At least that's the hand the teacher put the pencil in my hand when I was a kid.   I broke my right arm twice and both times ended up writing everything left handed while in a cast.

I play a right handed guitar.

But i shoot basketball with either.  My junior year in high school the coach had me change to right hand to shoot free throws.

I eat with my left and, drink left handed, putt (golf) left or right handed,  bat left or right handed, full golf swing right handed.

I had a foreign languages teacher in high school that would write on the board with both hands at times, at the same time.   Freaky thing to see.

Is that a Floor model & people come in & play it? I think a lot of guys go to Stores, try out new Guitars, then purchase that same model new Guitar, untouched in the box, at bigger discounts online…… Not saying it’s good or bad, right or wrong.. Just saying..

It was about 15 feet high up on a wall.   Its not a big shop at all. I'm certain they don't have more in the back or anything.   One person in there who seemed like the owner.   That city is near dead.   I bet he gets three or four people in there a day if that.    Just call and ask him.   He seemed like a nice gent.

The answer is of course "YES". The CEO's kids gotta eat.

I stopped off at 5 different shops yesterday I had never gone to before. (2+ hours from my home).   One shop was said to be the guitar place for all the local area musicians.   (The closest guitar center was over 120 miles away).   The only new LPs he had were a 2021 Standard and a couple of Studios.   The shop owner felt they were priced out of his market, and his customers don't even buy the Studios anymore.

At a second store, they had 5 or 6 new Gibson's but the guy working there said they hadn't sold a LP this year.    He had a Standard gold top for 2,800.  I asked him jokingly if he would take offers.   He said check back in 6 months it would probably still be there.

  9. Not really a fan.  I listened to KISS though,  started with 8 tracks then albums.  But after Ace left was done.

It's really interesting, Gene had this vault thing.  And you could pay some stupid amount of money and he would come hang out, play some stuff.    Then you get some container to keep with some items he put together.    Its really genius cause there were enough people who signed up for this.   After watching a few YouTube videos though, I question the sanity of some  LOL.   To each his/her own.

So, I expect there are enough out there who will pay whatever for this guitar.

Our local media has a policy.   They will not give physical descriptions of people police are looking for, but they will damn sure report someone is at large.    This started a few years ago because people complained it was always a certain type of person.

here is an example just from TODAY.......they blocked streets off looking for a male suspect.   This is a college town.   And right next to the college, Frat and Sorority row.
There are at least a dozen multistory parking garages within a mile of this location.   Yet no one knows who to watch for.  LOL  The  comments on social media are always entertaining.

As some have observed,  I believe media plays a much larger role in our behavior than ever before, Twitter and TicTok,  included in the media mix.

Those of us born before 1990 grew up in an era when the nightly news was delivered in 30 minutes by reporters who spent a career giving us facts with out personal opinion or political spin,  Walter Cronkite knew informed us of political affiliation,  just the facts.  Today we can't get away from "news."

I wonder if the human mind is just reaching the point of overload.

I worked for an NBC affiliate - in the studio -  back in the 80s.    At the time I didnt much care about anything other than trying to hook up with one of the reporters.

We had two producers who ran the show.   One of them hated Reagan with a passion.    So any national feed that reported something negative he made sure aired.   We'd get national stories fed to us all day and used any of those to fill time,   The other guy was friends with ppl in the mayor's office.   He was also shacking up with the asst news director.   So you see things on the news but knew there was always something else going on.   The local paper would create problems.    The entire place was a zoo to work in and somewhat entertaining.   But looking back, it was incredibly bias.

The problem news has now is, there is so much that people can find out for themselves.     But I think it's more about ratings, money and an agenda now.

    1.  If y'all are going to always take what I post WAY out of context,  or misinterpret it, I  guess further debate is pointless.

I never said anything about a "shot first approach".  One case I brought up referred to a young black man walking in the direction of a group of officers,  but at least ten yards away, and on a course that was progressively widening the distance between him and them.  The officers opened fire on the unarmed young man anyway.

Back to what we've learned in the last three years.....

That some will believe what their favorite iNet or radio "pundit" says, or an elected orangutan  over an experienced specialist in a specific field.

But gladly(and hopefully) people are getting around to learning that bearded beer guts wearing army surplus camo and sporting assault weapons are NOT REALLY the defenders of our freedom they like to pretend to be.   And what's up with those earlobes?

That more people care more about being allowed to do what they like to do and not the health and safety of their other loved ones or the people around them.

That people will SAY they wish to unite the country, but not if being united means it has to be with people that don't think or act the way they do.

    1.  There's been a "Me first" and "look out for #1"  attitude in this country for quite some time now.  Where ya been?

    2. Since I'm retired I've no more "commute to work" issues anymore.  But both my daughters agree with me in that I'll gladly pay any property tax increase if it's proved  the money will go towards returning driver's ed courses back in the high school.  NIFTY;  That you're not the slowest driver would be a Godsend to my girls.  They both constantly gripe about idiots getting into the left lane on the freeway( AKA; the "fast lane") and barely reaching 20 below the speed limit(70mph in MI.)

I myself find a lot of driver idiocy on just the main roads.  Like, what's up with this trend of seemingly counting to 20 after the light turns green before finally locating the gas pedal?  [confused]  Or the other trend I see where many feel the need to stop THREE CAR LENGTHS behind the car in front of them at a light?    OR coming to damn near a complete stop before turning from the main road onto a side street, or into the parking lot of a convenience store?

I can go on, but just thinking of this stuff has my breakfast churning.

    3. Social media( or what Rat in "Pearls Before Swine" calls "unsocial media") has always seemed to think it's better than it ever really was.  I got out after a few months and when it was clear if you didn't go along with the majority or joined in on the like minded "circle jerk" you're not really all that welcome.  And there are more phonies than in RUPAUL'S "drag race".  [wink]

    4.  My Grandmother, Mother, Brother and I have all worked in the food industry.  Mom and Grandma for years as both waitresses and cooks.  There's always been contentious customers, cheap tippers and unruly customers disregarding other patrons.  But you're right.  I've noticed even back when my wife and I would go out to eat there's an untold increase in them.  I even have a sister in law who'll forego tipping the waitress with the complaint that the food wasn't any good.  And all of us reminding her that the waitress didn't cook it doesn't  matter to her.

And don't get me started on school violence.  That is, if it was all the school shootings you were averting to.

  13. Anyone notice people in general, are more aggressive today than before?  There is an anger I haven't seen.

My commute to work is like a case study in defensive driving.  I'm not the slowest driver and I have the citations to prove it.  But what I am seeing now on the road is downright insane.  There is a difference in driving fast and then driving like a total a-hole.

Social media - the amount of  arguing has increased.  The one-upsmanship, the back and forth.... good night people take what someone else posts to a point they get physically mad.   The social media tech giants don't help either because they have shown their own fact checking abilities are far from accurate.

Restaurants - I know many who work in the industry.   They have complaints too.   Short tempered customers,  stiffed on tips,  customers with a disregard for other customers.   It's just not what it was.   A friend of mine manages one place and she said it's nearly impossible to keep everyone who works there happy because it can be so contentious at times.  And with shortages, the attitude spills over to overworked staff.

Schools - violence is on the rise.  I won't say much more other than I deal with this daily.

I dont know what it is, but something has happened.

    ^^^^^This!!!^^^^^^

Research and find the best local boffin to do everything your guitars need....everything.

I heard about my luthier/tech so many years ago, had a problem with a resophonic in the 90s and was told he was the man. And he is!

Rarely had a problem with anything he does and a most exciting time was getting him to make a custom 00 for me. That has given such an emotional connection that I feel like phoning him and thanking him.....each time I play my custom or a guitar he set.......but so do all his customers!

    BluesKing777.

Count me in on this as well.

Last year, I bought a LP Classic from GC.   That was an experience by itself but the price was good (around 1800 I recall).

I took it to one of two local luthier's and told him to do whatever was needed.   For $80, he restrung it but also adjusted everything else.   When I picked it up he had everything written down - before and after specs, etc.      He said try it for a few weeks and come back if something was off.   It was night and day.

I'd say these guitars (at least mine) have issues off the rack.   Outside of some play-ability,  about all you can tell in a store is the finish and construction,  unless you want to start measuring things.

    The spec says - 2 Push/Pull Volumes (Coil-Tap), 2 Push/Pull Tones (Pure Bypass/Phase).

The pure bypass (AFAIK) does exactly that; bypasses the circuitry to give you max output at full treble from the pickups.  So that might in fact defeat the other push/pulls.

The phase is obviously to try and recreate the Peter Green sound and should make most difference with the pickup selector switch in the mid-position.  The coil taps make each pickup sound more like a single-coil.

If you knew all this already, apologies!  There must be a youtube vid out there which demonstrates it.....:-k

    Best wishes.

No i didnt in this detail.   Thanks for the answer.

  16. I never paid attention to this stuff and now I'm really curious.   What is supposed to be the result of the combinations of pulled knobs on the LP Classic.  (I read "make it sound like a Tele".   I've poked around and just dont see a complete description.

Well I do know they will work with you for sure on price. I bought a brand new 2018 American profession strat from them and they took a nice discount off price on it.

I called in advanced and asked what they had and then said I will be there in a couple of hours.

When I asked what the best price I could get it for out the door, it came to 1354.00 tax in.

    It was listed at 1499.99

    I bought it.

This is common. I look at GC like a car dealership.  There is MSRP, then what they can/will sell it for.  I got a good deal on a LP Classic.   Friend picked up a Studio with a decent discount.   I always try local first though.

We had some nice music stores around until GC showed up, then some of them closed up.    The "internet" didn't help either.  One store became mostly a repair shop.  He' still in business and carrys used instruments but the selection is sparse.   The other store doesn't carry much guitar inventory any more, mostly horns, and band instruments.   I got my first LP from them decades ago.   But they're no longer a Gibson dealer and their inventory is a third of what it once was.  The manager has vented more than once about the box store down the street(referring to GC) getting first shot at anything that comes out.      Its really a shame cause it was a fantastic store for musicians.

My local GC (about a mile from here) has evolved into something with literally no resemblance at all to what it was around 17-18 years ago.   From knowledgeable sales folks, they now have teeny—boppers or “cool” people who don’t know their *** from a hole in the ground.  I’ll get strings there when they’re on sale, but I won’t spend big dollars there anymore.  I have no confidence in the in-store employees and definitely don’t need a “gear advisor.”

My local GC had a used acoustic 12 string I was looking at.  I picked it up but good night it was all out of tune,  then they told me.... C tuning, and badly at that .  One of the employees there told me another employee screwed with the tuning because there were "some songs he was playing the other day".  Guy offered to tune it so I waited while he "attempted" to put humpty dumpty back together.    Five minutes later and it was still wasn't in tune.     I left them with the guitar, they asked me to wait just a little more but I'd had enough.   Had they just left it alone I might have bought it.

Could it be they were huge in just a matter of years, were making money hand over fist and then Ace and Peter liked to booze and Coc it up (I don't think Gene or Paul were druggies)? I liked them when I was younger, but they are just another band than stayed around way to long and no one cared about them once they took the make-up off and so they put it back on. I can go back to the first 5 or so albums and regain my child hood, but a lot of their music is just not that good. They do put on a great show, but I have seen them 4 times and refuse to pay what they want for a ticket to the final tour.

That's part of it but the book fills in a lot of the blanks.    Each had their own "issues" and some of those are not glossed over.

I will still listen to their 70s era music if I'm in the mood,  but not albums cover to cover or anything like that.

IMO, Ace put together the best songs they had.   Cold Gin and Parasite were his.   Much of the KISS sound as known back then,  the bends and the slides, was all Ace.   Buckcherry's Lit Up is a take from Shock Me.    His solo album was the only one to do anything.     Not that it's a verifiable fact, I've read accounts from people that bothered Gene and Paul to no end.   Ace was in high demand for a long time from bands whose members were influenced by KISS.    He did some performances with Skid Row.

At the music awards,   Ace appeared with Tommy Lee,  Slash, Gilby Clark, Scott and Rob Zombie for this God Of Thunder Thing.   But I read this was the night he relapsed cause Slash gave him a shot or something.
