Another one of those guys who is rarely mentioned outside of folks like us.  Saw him in Kansas City last fall at Knucklehead’s. I thinkk he’s scheduled again for late May, unless all this bull crap caused it to be changed to a later date.   If you’re like us, he’s a legend or will soon become one.  If you’re not like us, I feel sorry for you, because you’re missing-out on a lot.  When we saw him, he was full of Johnny and Willie stories and a couple Guy Clark jokes, along with his own very rough-cut songs about life.  He was never pretty and never tried to be.  He is who he is.  He’s too real for mainstream radio.

Yup. I have been lucky enough to see him three times. A great performer!

I had the pleasure of holding in my hands Tom Wilsons  j45 ...Tom Wilson of Junkhouse  and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings .,i flip the guitar over and the body has a centre seam ,and the perfling round the sound hole not looking like that of a 57  j 45   ,,,this is the year he was told was it`s birth year .  The guitar was given to Tom by the late Willie P Bennett`s family .

I introduced my self ,by saying  ,Tom your  a big s.o.b ..and that i was feeling slightly intimidated ....he laughed ,saying he`s  a gentle   giant from the streets of Hamilton ....Anyhow ,we talked about his guitar`s story , i said ,looks to me like it`s a 57  S.J body ,judging by the f.o.n.  and it`s appointments  with a grafted j45 neck .. he had no clue ....the thing was sweet , well worn ,had the crap played into it  ,sounded great and has written some great songs .

Totally my pleasure ...Frank on Frankenstein .

Cool story! Don’t want to hijack the thread so I’m just going to post the link to my earlier thread about the Building of My Frankenstein, in case anyone is interested. https://forum.gibson.com/topic/143283-just-did-something-financially-irresponsible/

And here is Aaron’s (luthier) about the process:

  3. One of Ray’s Guitars is described by him as a Frankenstein. I have one of my own. 😉

    His words describing this guitar:

“someone asked about my guitar so here you go. i found this 1949 gibson j45 neck at junkyard guitars in illinois for a 100 bucks and put in on a 1959 southern jumbo body that  someone had put a 72 neck on that was just not worth a damn.  too narrow. now if you gonna build a frankenstein monster everybody knows you need lightning. well you also need tony nobles in wimberley to fuse the body and neck together.
when i'm over at his place and he is working on guitars i expect to hear some evil scientist laugh but he never does.”

Looks like a Honky Tonk Deuce. I think they came in either natural or sunburst.  Basically, a rosewood-bodied SJ with special appointments and details.

There are several board members here that own them.

You are correct, Nick. He borrowed that guitar for the Hippie Jack Show because he didn’t want to fly with his own guitars for the show. It is owned by Elizabeth Cook, a very good Singer/Songwriter.

  5. Hey Folks—

If you’re so inclined to view, I have put up a video playing my Frankenstein Gibson ‘38 L-00 Neck/‘48 J-50 Body. I started getting a little down because I’m up to 20 missed gigs. Felt good to put out this no frills phone video. As Neil Young would say, “Ragged but real”. Wishing everyone the best during these Challenging Times.

  6. Hey Folks—Hope everyone is staying healthy. I am resurrecting this Zombie Thread to share information about Minerva Guitars.

Not the guitars built in Canada in the 30’s and 40’s, but new ones built by a young fellow in Tennessee named Issac Stroupe.
Here is his take on the ‘34 Martelle Deluxe which is the original subject of this thread. No affiliation, but I thought it sounded pretty nice.

  7. Yeah, I can relate about having to go it as a solo almost 100% of the time (an occasional duo or trio can work at times if the money is right). I’m a Journeyman New Orleans Musician. Luckily I still sell enough CDs to make a slight profit after all costs of the project (but full disclosure, it took three years to break even). My buyers are mostly older out of town folks at gigs who want to bring back a memento of their trip to New Orleans. My digital revenue is a joke.

I’m about to release a six song EP. It will be interesting to see if I can turn a profit.

If any of y’all ever get down to New Orleans, let me know. We can do a sit in!

Well the Roy wasn't the solution. Bizarrely, even with the gain fully turned down, singing at something approaching gig volume into a vocal mic causes the Overload light to come on and clipping to be induced.

I've tried three mics, my live go-to Sennheiser E865, my backup AKG D7 and a Rode NT1A I had in the studio and all three suffered from the same issue on every channel.

I wasn't put off by the fact it weighs roughly the same as the average family car, but was somewhat perplexed that whilst the cabinet was hewn from mighty Baltic ply, the grille fabric appeared to be made from the most fragile of sheer tights. My first thought was "I mustn't let the cat get anywhere near this!".

It sounded great for guitar, though. Hugely disappointed that it won't do the job and totally dispirited in my search for an amp that might fit the bill. Back to awkward powered speakers on stands and fussy mixers I guess.

Darn it. So sorry, Jinder. Thought surely that Schertler was your answer. I’ve never had the problem with vocal mics you have described but I’m guessing I didn’t have to turn things up very high in my small venues.

    Onward and upward!

So...the AER is going back, and I've decided to try the top of the line Schertler amp, the Roy. A lot of people have been raving about the Schertler gear, so I figured that would be the next in line to try. The demos online sound fantastic, so I'm looking forward to trying it.

Hope you like the Roy! The Schertler gear I have (the predecessor to the Jam 400 made by the then named SR Technology and a Schertler extension speaker) has really served me well. The weight is a bit of a concern at times, but the tone is sublime. Good luck, Jinder!

  10. This is so great! As others have said, don’t just take this to anyone to work on. Where are you located? I’m sure someone on this forum could direct you to a qualified luthier who could work on this somewhat close to you geographically.

And you have the best food down there, too.

    Cajun's are annoying sometimes...

You’re cracking me up, Murph! Even though I’m just half Cajun (Mom’s a Broussard), Friends and Family have assured me that I am 100% annoying.

Getting back on topic, a great guitar slinger such as yourself is probably aware of Rodney’s good friend and his lead guitarist last night, Steuart  Smith. He replaced Don Felder in The Eagles in 2001. The Dude can do it all! Rock it hard if needed, or play it sweet and soulful with taste as well.

Around 1977 I had a 3 piece band playing in a very old club in Apache Jct. Az. ( East Mesa/Phoenix) I had played that same very popular club for a year or so with a very hot and popular Country band, but this was a Rock act. The place was packed, big established place and we were well received. I got a note on a napkin saying we were sounding good, but we were playing too many songs in the same key. It was signed Jerry Garcia.

I had never heard the name Jerry Garcia, didn't know who he was. I mean, I had HEARD of the Grateful Dead, but at 19 I was into Skynyrd, Eagles, ZZ Topp, Foghat, Joe Walsh, you know. Didn't know the name, and didn't recognize him either. I took offense and announced to the crowd that Jerry Garcia was going to sit in and play a song, took off my guitar and waved him up. Nobody in the crowd knew who he was either, he got up and played something with my bass player and drummer. Whatever it was didn't work very well and when he was done he left.

It was well over another year before I realized who it was, and decades before I realized the genius and passion for acoustic music of Jerry Garcia. However, I never forgot the advice and to this day will rarely play 2 songs back to back in the same key, and took great care on projects to avoid it as well.

    No.

I didn't have enough sense to save the napkin. ( however, I own a 1962 Double Cut Twin Pickup Gibson Melody Maker that was once played by Jerry Garcia )

Great story, Murph! I also try to follow the not playing two songs in a row in the same key, although it’s not easy during a four hour gig.

At least that no name JG left you with some useful advice!

In the same frame as the above billing problem......

I as lead guitarist in a band and the singer rang me to say we could do a ‘fill in job’ for a fairly well known band who couldn’t make it, but we had to leave ‘now’ to start on time. I grabbed my stuff, loaded the car and headed off to......the wrong address! The singer gave us all the wrong address! All the others were there! No gig there! Before anyone had phones, so we drove around the main type streets of the area look for a gigworthy establishment. Drove everywhere and FOUND it! Ha haha ...mad laughs...and the sign that the singer had chalked on a board was spelled wrong! What was supposed to be Rhythm and blues band was Rythim or something similarly awful...and of course we were not loved for being so late!

Your singer was not the sharpest knife in the drawer. 😂

I played a Hell's Angel bash once and got knocked in the head by thrown beer bottle. Who knew they didn't like Joni Mitchell songs!

Yeah, the older girl on his lap doesn’t look very comfortable. As for the Hell’s Angels gig, you were just trying broaden their horizons a little with the JM songs. How ungrateful of them. 😉

  15. Sorry if this just comes off as self-indulgent, but I had to post two photos that are symbolic of my exalted status in Show Biz.

The first one from the past Spring  shows how I have shared the stage with many iconic entertainers:

The second one from about five years ago is my #spinaltapmoment (I'm sure most of you will get it 🙂:

Feel free to share yours! Photos and/or stories?

I'd be really surprised if a company like Stew Mac would sell something with an illegal copy of the Gibson logo. But maybe best not to get one anyway, since it will give you cancer. 🤣

    "WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm"

Agreed. Stew Mac’s is too high profile to get away with selling unauthorized knock offs.
