  1. In addition to my Gibson Epi Acoustic Electric Guitars I have an old Martin D-35. It is quite powerful & sounds great.. But, it also sounds great at low & mid volume.

There are all kinds of fine Guitars..

When it comes to playing with other Musicians I expect them understand Dynamics & apply them.. Nobody needs to be stepping all over the Group. The goal should be balanced levels, no matter what Instrument your playing..

There’s othet factors besides the guitar scale and tone woods.  Strings, string height, pick, attack.

For sure… very important.. But, the first thing you have to do is try them & decide which one to buy.. Then make all the adjustments.. Dynamics apply to everything…

Lars, you know I have the Koa.   I've had it for 13 years....and it REALLY opened up after 7-8 years.    The neck is wider than my Doves, and with the short scale, is wonderful to play and gives me the perfect backing for my (awful) singing.

The Hummingbird 12-String is a monster.... will drown out the Doves without even trying....but that could be because of the extra 6 strings....it's mahogany and was well opened up before I got it from Leslie.

If you want to be heard in a acoustic jam....then a Dove is what you should choose.   Maple, long scale....both of mine are VERY aggressive and used to being played HARD.

I watch your Videos & enjoy them.. Your Bird does sound really good. I’ve been curious about Koa.. In Hawaii it’s the wood of choice for Ukes.. I have seen & heard how amazing they look & how incredible they sound.. Does Koa have the strength of Rosewood?

  4. The Hummingbird is one of my most favorite Guitars.. It is on my short list..

They come with several different choices for Backs & Sifes. Mahogany, Maple, Rosewood & Koa…

Price from low to high.. The Standard has Mahogany.. Originals have Maple.  The Deluxe has Rosewood Back & Sides. The Custom has Koa & is the most expensive.

A lot of choices! They must all have their own unique Sound.. They all should have different Tones & Volume levels.

Has anyone played all 4 side by side? or own all 4? If budget wasn’t an issue which one would you choose? And Why?

For $400,  I'd buy it just to make him wonder.

If it’s a real 90’s Gibson Les Paul with no major problems $400.00 is a steal..  On Reverb they’re over $2000.00 + up.. Even a 90’s Orville is $1188.00..

    $400.00…. Something fishy..

  6. You can’t expect a great new Acoustic Guitar to sound like a great aged Acoustic Guitar. For new Acoustic Guitars the question is, does it sound good enough now? That’s why it’s so important to play before you buy or buy with a no hassle 45 day Return or Exchange policy..

  7. The Pictures are cool.. And you got some nice Guitars.. But, that music was & still is magic.. Even though the recordings weren’t done in big fancy Studios with all kinds of Gear & using all the tricks those early Recordings by guys like Robert Johnson still stand up today.

I too would like to see a Gibson Robert Johnson Guitar..

  8. This is an interesting Thread.. I’ve always been drawn to the Blues since I was a little kid.. Especially those early Blues Records.. I’m not sure why though? There’s something magical about them. I’ve always been curious what Guitars Robert Johnson actually played on those Recordings? A lot of those other early Blues Guys too?

I didn’t start playing Guitar til I was in the Army & was broke all the time. A Guy named Dave from Pittsburgh played his Acoustic every minute we were off duty.. He was really into the Blues.. Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed to name a few.. He also was playing Yardirds, Stones & some other modern Blues Bands.. He was already an extremely good Guitarist.. He didn’t sing though..

I said, I can sing some of those songs & we started playing together.. I asked him to teach me to play Guitar.. He showed how to play Bar Chords & I practiced all the time.. Like I said I was always broke after a night or two in D.C.

We started getting pretty decent & he suggested I try to play Harp. I was already a fan of Little Walter & Jimmy Reed.. And modern Harp players like Dylan, Keith Relf, Brian Jones & Mick Jagger..

I bought one in the key of A & a neck brace.. I started faking it.. I was playing very poorly on Guitar & Harp but could sing half way decent. I didn’t play Guitar too loud & Dave made us sound good.. We played together for a year & it was awesome! Then I got orders for Vietnam..

I owe that old Army buddy so much. I was never able to find him after I got out.. He disappeared.. I still remember him & the fun times we had playing & wish I could find him..

We could be 2 old Guys playing the Blues.. I’d like that….

    I’m digging this Thread..

How did he get so much money?

    People buy his music?

    Who?

I mean, I've seen him on YouTube and on t.v. a few times, but would never pay to see him.

    I guess somebody does.

How does a kid start playing with B.B. King when he’s 11 years old? How does he get Frank Sinatra’s Mgr? I don’t know about his back story but very well could be he was born into it.. Coming from a family of Wealth & Influence doesn’t hurt… I don’t know that he did but, either that or his Stars aligned…

  10. I want a Gibson Memphis VOS ES Les Paul Gold Top with P90’s & Bigsby.. Originally new they were about $2495.00.. Nice ones in the Used market are double.. About $4995.00..

Just before they were introduced I bought the Gibson Memphis Blacktop ES Les Paul with MHS Pickups & Bigsby for about $2000.00.. New..

Seemed like the next day the introduced the Gold Top.. I wanted one & by the time I could justify spending another $2000.00 for my 35th Guitar they were sold out..

I’m not seeing desirable Guitars going down.. Just the opposite.. They’re going up… And they’re hard to find..

  11. I bought an EJ-160E and liked it but not the Signature printed on the Top. I returned it. A couple years later I bought a Bozeman Gibson J-160E & I play it more than my EPI Texan, my Martin D35 & my Martin D12-16GTE.

They have  recently reissued the EJ-160E. I’m thinking about getting one as a backup since Gibson doesn’t produce the J-160E anymore.

  12. I bought a Sunburst Gibson ES-175 back in the early 2000’s. The Guitar was beautiful. The Pickups sounded harsh though. Unaware that I could’ve upgraded them to Fralin, Lollar, Duncan, Thro-Bak or other great sounding boutique Pickups I returned it…

    Another Got away….

  13. I pretty much quit going to GC before I got gray hair.. It had nothing to do with my hair & everything to do with GC’s not having what I’m I interested in buying.. And the cocky attitude of young wannabe Rock Stars who work there & act like they’ve never heard of Discounts….

The exception being Hollywood Guitar Center.. That is like a Candy Store to a kid!
