  1. You have a thread from 2018 about  a Gibson Archtop (mid-1930's) "Non-Catalog Special" Black.  I am looking for the rare information about my own black archtop,     The info was posted a few years back and I have come to the conclusion it is a "non-catalog Special No.5" and was probably  purchased new in 1941 for a Christmas gift. ($24.50).  It was restored to working condition by a local luthier who did not take the character away but mainly cleaned it up and added the missing pick guard and strings.   We are looking for any information you could provide.....

Thanks a bunch for any, (I mean any) information you could add!!

    My previous post with photos.....

Look up “Gibson Black Special No 4” in google.

Mine is 1935, plays great, sounds great. History is sketchy, sorry - I have read conflicting stories - meant to be black...or...black to cover up something off....but it is a flat backed L-50 basically.

I second the "sketchy history".    According to my serial number it is 1940.  Looking for info is hard to come across.  Thank you for your information.   I agree that is sounds very good and is an excellent addition to our family.   If information about the "specials" comes your way, please keep me in mind.  Thanks again!
