  1. I've investigated this myself, having owned a few of each over the past couple years... Two definite factors are the difference between Kluson and modern Grover tuners, and the difference between the aluminum and zinc tailpieces. I assure you - from experience - that the combination of these factors changes not only the weight significantly but also the note attack and overall tone of the instrument. By replacing my Dot's tuners and tailpiece I shaved over half a pound off, as well as improved the tone. The tonal improvement may be my opinion, but the weight difference is a fact. Personally I like the look of the Kluson-style tuners way more than the Grovers as well.

  4. The Dot Reissue is the standard production 335, and comes in flame or plain tops. Any other 335's currently in production are "special", like the Reissues on the high end, or the Satin finished ones on the lower end. Yes the "19xx Reissue" ones are vastly more expensive, you are paying for the vintage styling and details. Whether that's worth the extra money is up to you... In my avatar the black one is a Dot Reissue and the sunburst is a 1963 Block Reissue.
  5. I own one, in red. Fantastic guitar, unique tone and voice, feather light. Feedsback easily though, and I wasn't impressed with the stock pickups so I changed them. While I do love it, it's no substitute for my 335's...
  6. While I don't have a '59 Reissue, I just got the '63 Reissue about a month ago. I have also observed that the vintage-style models sound different from the modern models - much brighter and snappier, almost Tele-like. Is this along the lines of what you observed with the '59?
  7. Congrats man, I love it! I'm going to make a guess that you got that from Wildwood guitars? I recognize the figuring behind the bridge, and in fact I almost bought that very guitar myself. Ended up with a sunburst instead since I already have a red 330, but man I do love that red 335! How's the tone?
  8. The modern Dots tend to be a little heavier than the vintage styled ones, but of course there's always variance so if weight's important you'll just have to shop around. From my experience there are also tonal differences between the two, so that could be a consideration as well... My Dot is somewhere between 8 1/2-9 lbs, and my '63 Block Reissue is almost a pound lighter between 7 1/2-8 lbs (I really want to get a fishscale or something to know exactly). The two guitars sound nothing alike, with the Dot having a warm, thick tone and the Block having a brighter tone without nearly as much low end. Both are great and I like having the contrasting 335 colors, personally.
  9. I'm a big fan of the Tonepros AVRII, it is an improvement in every way: more intonation room, locks to the posts, looks identical to the real thing, and even though it does have the retainer clip there is *no rattle* whatsoever. Money well spent, for me it's a no-brainer...
  10. Hey Steve! Yeah I've never seen definitive proof of exact dates for the Blocks, I don't think even Gibson knows for sure haha. This site has a pretty good rundown of the 335's history, and it says Blocks were out since '62: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/es335.html However it also says that the wire retainer was added to the ABR bridge in '62, and my '63 Reissue doesn't have one... Seems I was wrong about the centerblock on the "60's Block", it is indeed maple. It's the body that is apparently maple/poplar/maple, according to Gibson's website. That particular guitar was freakishly lightweight, so maybe that's why I got it in my head that it had a different centerblock wood. As for the modern Dots, while their weight and fit&finish do vary a bit, every one I've played has sounded amazing. They have that perfect combination of warmth and air IMO, like a semi-hollow LP which is the definitive 335 tone in my book. But these vintage-style models are a different beast all together; they are nice and lightweight, but very bright toned with a little more upper-mid "honk" in the acoustic sound. The fit&finish does seem to be a little better on these, but while my new Reissue has a perfectly Plek'd fretjob, the F-holes are embarrasingly atrocious, rough to the point of splintering and not even blacked out (the "60's Block had them blackened)...so bad I'm probably going to take it to a luthier to have them finished. For over $4.5K that is just maddening to me! Hope this helps, if you have any more questions feel free! If anyone else has any thoughts I'd love to hear them. I know it's an old thread, but Google never forgets haha. I figure it helped me to find this, so I'd contribute to maybe help someone else down the road...
  11. Hate to bump a year-old thread, but I've just gone through the same thing as the OP: I recently bought the 1963 Reissue to compliment my modern Dot. I've previously owned the newer "60's Block" version as well, and both of these 60's-style models have been completely different tonally than the modern Dots I've owned/played. It has nothing to do with electronics or capacitors, because it's in their acoustic tone. I was especially surprised that the '63 Reissue sounded so much like the '60's Block and not more like the Dots because the Reissue has a maple centerblock whereas the "Block" has poplar. Plugged-in the difference diminishes slightly since the Reissue has Classic 57's and the Block has Burstbuckers, but the difference is still there. One sounds more like a Les Paul, the other more like a Tele. I love them both, but they have opposite tones even though they are made from the exact same materials.

    335 vs 330

    I like my 330 very much, but if it were an either/or situation I'd go with the 335 hands-down. They are very different guitars, and I find the 330 to have a very distinct sound and personality, whereas the 335 is more of an "all 'rounder" if you get my drift. Personally if the 330 had humbuckers it would go up a notch on my list, but that's just me. I find that while P90's have a cool sound, they are not as versatile as humbuckers and also sit very high on the guitar physically, often intruding on my picking. Having said all that, I do love how it's got its own thing happening. Mine keeps asking for a Bigsby, but it ain't happening this Christmas unfortunately...
