  1. Korina (white and black limba) is an option on many Kiesel guitars, but always costs more than mahogany.
  2. The 2016 SG Faded T has the 50s style neck. Apparently Gibson had some overstocks because new ones popped at various dealers at the end of 2017. You might still be able to find one.

    Dear Santa,

There is a classic Saturday Night Live skit--Dana Carvey as the Church Lady--that notes the similarity between Santa and Satan. Of course, the SG looks like it has devil horns, which is presumably what prompted Les Paul to complain it's "evil looking."

    Dear Santa,

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what justifies the price of the Gibson Custom guitars. Still, Santa's lucky I didn't ask for the $11,999 Custom Les Paul. http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2017/Custom/Slash-1958-Les-Paul-First-Standard-8-3096-Replica.aspx

    Dear Santa,

Yeah. No cheap Gibson knock-offs made in one of your sweatshops. I've got cellphone footage of Mommy kissing you under the mistletoe. If I don't get what I want, that video is going viral.

    Dear Santa,

Okay, I admit it's been awhile since I believed in you. But that's no excuse for kicking me to the curb for 40 years. Please deliver me one of these. It will go a long way in restoring my faith: http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2016/Custom/Standard-Historic-SG-Standard.aspx PS Please keep the guitar in its case. The sudden change from outdoor North Pole temperature to room temperature could damage the finish.
  7. I hear that dry air can cause some fretboards to crack. Yes, humidifiers are a must for guitar owners in most climates.
  8. An alternative to grounding the tailpiece would be to use locking studs. Tonepros, Faber, and Guitarfetish all make these. http://www.tonepros.com/ss1-tonepros-standard-locking-studs/
  9. Is there any way to add locking tuners to the HP self-tuning mechanism? Locking tuners are a must for me since they make changing strings bearable.
  10. Many people report better sustain with locking systems. I figured I would try one out and see for myself. The basic tone of the stock aluminum hardware is okay with me, so maybe I'll go with TonePros' new aluminum bridge. GuitarFetish offers brass locking bridges and tailpieces as an alternative. Faber offers a third alternative.
  11. I plan to swap out the stock bridge on my SG Faded T with a TonePros. However, after communicating with customer service I learned that I'll have two options after NAMM 2018: ZAMAK (a zinc alloy and their current standard) or aluminum. I'm not foolish enough to ask "which would sound better" because that would be entirely subjective. But I wonder if anyone here has experience with different bridge materials who could say something about qualitative differences in tone between heavier and lighter bridge metals. Also, does heavier lead to more sustain, or is the issue more complicated?

And that's just the first day of Christmas. Imagine what you'll get on the twelfth day. :) (I vote for a 12 string guitar.)
  13. I just got a 2017 SG Faded T. I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading the stock bridge (and the tailpiece? or just the tailpiece studs?) with a Tonepros bridge. Has anyone tried this? I believe the 2017 SG Special has the same stock bridge.
  14. Thanks for the insight. Looking at the other 2017 SGs, it lists 3 pieces, 2 pieces, and "1/3 pieces" (?).
  15. Hmm, maybe Gibson needs to develop a special flame-retardant finish just for you. :)
