Questions about a Gibson Les Paul Custom

Hi guys!

I need some help, I want to buy a Gibson Les Paul Custom 1979. But I have several questions about it. I hope you can help me with that (I'm worried because I don't to get any fake guitar).

I've already got a Gibson Les Paul; but the logo of Gibson as you can see in the picture below, between the letter "o" and the letter "n" there is a diferent.

Also in the back of the guitar (in the serial number part) there is a label that it says "second" instead of the serial number (but there has a serial number but is faded).

Thank you very much for you help.

Regards!

Kan

Hello Kan,

from the pictures you provided I can't see any alarm signals. There also is one among my Gibson guitars with a closed "o", in particular my 1978 S-G Standard which is positively legit. There also exist real Gibsons showing a brand inlay without an "i" dot. Sometimes the i-dot is a bit offset to the "G", especially on guitars with a silkscreened brand name.

It would be interesting what the reason for the "Second" classification should be. Usually it is nothing which affects playability or tone but just looks. However, it should result in a lower price.

Hope this helps,

I'm no expert on spotting fakes. But I have never seen or heard of anyone faking a second.

The seconds from those years are fine guitars and what ever deemed it a second at the time is

likely covered by age. You would have trouble finding the flaw when it was new let alone 35 years later.

They never should have used that big ugly word to identify them.

I had a 78 deluxe I almost bought that was a second. It was a beauty. It was just too expensive for me.

And if I remember right the word 'second' and the serial number were stamped.

Did you say yours was "faded"? hard to tell in your pic.

I think the closed o and b are normal for that year.

I'm sure there will be more experience chiming in to help you.

But it looks good to me.
