WoodSkin&Steel
I need to replace the tuners on my '01 J-45. Is there something that will not require massive drilling and that will stay in tune? It seems like the stock tuners drift almost every time I play. Thank you all... modoc_333
are you sure the nut isn't the issue? after 7 years of having strings run through them, it's possible that it nees a little work. it may have not been done right to start with, or you could be using a set where all of the strings aren't the exact guage the nut was cut for. (even 12s of 2 different brands will vary on the middle strings). i only ask b/c 99% of the time, the tuning problem is NOT the fault of the machine heads... but they always get blamed b/c they seem to be the most obvious option. WoodSkin&Steel
It is usually the G and B strings that go out - would the nut be causing this problem?I am using Elixer light guage strings (standard Light)
Rosewoody
Could be the nut, could be the way you tie off the strings at the post. I agree with Modoc, prolly not the tuners. I have never had "bad" tuners, but I have thought I did. Even cheap contemporary tuners like Pings hold up very well. This is not so true for the older, vintage Klusons, but I'm pretty sure you have the Gotoh Kluson k-offs, which are decent tuners. You could try try lubing nut w/a little graphite, too.
