ico Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Hi there ! I've recently bought a 89' L4 CES from a private seller, the serial number is 80629526 the guy did't got the original case and no documentation. I compared my L4 with another one which is from 1988 and has a sunburst finish too , I noticed some differences : -The back of the 88' L4 has natural finish (body , neck and headstock); while mine instead has sunburst and the back of the headstock is black -The 88' one seems to have a more open voice acoustically; while mine sounds a little boxy (but, maybe because it has been played very few times) - I have the impression that the signature inside my instrument isn't very natural, also the "t" and the "m" seems to be different except for these points, the instrument seems to be very well made, the quality of the finish and bindings is of the same level of any other gibson I have previously tried here are some pictures : https://imageshack.com/i/pc8z3VMej https://imageshack.com/i/f0Y1qJkEj https://imageshack.com/i/idBteXy7j https://imageshack.com/i/kmDdVD3fj https://imageshack.com/i/p4WGyW8Fj https://imageshack.com/i/exRdGDJKj https://imageshack.com/i/p4V2U5bVj https://imageshack.com/i/ipJV3Hwsj can you tell if my guitar is authentic ? Thank you!
powerwagonjohn Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Your L-4CES looks consistent with a laminated mahogany back and sides model made in 1988 as far as I can tell. Plus signed by Hutch who was one of there top luthiers. As for the difference in sound of the two guitars, you could be correct and one just needs to be played everyday for a year or two. It is interesting to note the changes over 20 years of production compared to my 2009 L-4CES. I am sure that is one nice guitar and you will enjoy it. Thanks John
