Why does R7 Les Paul Custom (Normally called black beauty) has lower pickup rings?

 

Recently I have noticed that R7 LP Customs have lower pickup rings, whereas all other historic LP Standard R6~R0 have taller pickup rings.

Just to clarify, I think that typically most people associate  the R7 designation as a 1957 Gold Top reissue.  The '57 Custom is also a historic reissue, but obviously not the same and those are typically referred to as '57 Custom.  It's a little confusing.

As far as the pickup rings, I believe that the lower rings for the '57 Custom are correct.  Here are some pics of an original '57.
