Dating a L00 3/4 ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm Antonin, from Paris, France.

I recently bought from a french musician a guitar he told me he bought at Gruhn’s in 1992, and is in France since.
It's a beautiful Gibson L00 3/4 that the seller told me was from 1935/1938. Serial Number (may be FON) is 9303 if I read correctly.
Very nice guitar, with that very distinctive sound of these old small-body Gibson.
Please find attached some pictures of it.

There's some things I have in mind about this guitar, especially regarding its crafting’s year.

I'm not an expert, far from this, but I’ve read a lot about the old Gibson flat tops between 1925 and 1939, because I love these guitars.
That's why I'd like to share my interrogations with you.
I'll give you all these questions I have and I'd be pleased to have your opinion on this.

I've made a lot of researches about the L00 3/4, and all the models I could find on internet are from 1935/1938, sunburst painted, with a pickguard and a longer bridge than mine.
I've been unable to find a guitar like mine, with a natural color, no pickguard, and that very small bridge.

The closest guitars from mine I could find from this era were some L0 or L1 from around 1928/31, that have the same bridge, same body finish, no pickguard, and the same binding too.

The logo too, is different on the L00s 3/4 from 193X (a "Gibson" scripted) but my guitar has a "The Gibson" scripted, and this logo is supposed to be only on guitars before 1933.

Here's a link to a 193X L00 3/4 that I found on internet : https://www.gbase.com/gear/gibson-l-00-3-4-1935-sunburst

And the serial number, 9303, which seems to be the Factory Order Number (FON), stamped on the neck block, has no letter which is supposed to date the guitar before 1935, and 9303 could date the guitar from between 1925 and 1931 (I used this : https://reverb.com/news/how-to-date-a-gibson-using-serial-numbers-fons-and-logos).
This website is more precise and date the guitar from 1929 : http://www.guitarhq.com/loo.html

But I read that the FON could have reroll to these numbers after 1933 too... So nothing’s sure about this.

So, maybe now you can understand why I have so much interrogations about this guitar : all the clues I can find (bridge, FON, logo) on it are giving me the feeling (when comparing it with informations on the web) that this guitar could be from around 1929, which is very strange because this 3/4 model is supposed to be dated between 1935 and 1938...

That's why I'm looking for answers to all my questions, I'd really like to be sure about the year this guitar has been made, and I'm sure posting here can help me a lot.

You'll find some pictures of the case too, I don't know if it's the original one, but any information on it's age is welcome too.

Please feel free to ask me anything you could need :  more pictures, informations, ...
Thanks everyone !
