 I always figured it had to do with the popularity of the Hummingbird.   The SJ got square shoulders in 1962 followed quickly by the B45-12.  Doing away with the last remaining slope shoulder jumbos may have also been a cost saving thing as the tops now became interchangeable.  I am actually surprised he J45/50 retained slope shoulders as long as it did.
