How to put a cover on a pickup?

I have Gibson exposed 496R/500T. I'd like to put a cover on them.

What is the proper procedure? I did a simple test to see how the cover

would fit over the pickups. The side of the pickups bulges out slightly

and it was a tight fit. Do I need to take off the tape around the pickups?

No, don't take the tape off of the pickup. Simply place the cover over the pickup until it bottoms out. Then solder the base of the pickup to the cover in the middle of both sides. If you like, you can melt a small amount of bees wax onto the top of the pickup. Place the cover on while the wax is still soft and press them together firmly. Hold until cool and then solder together.

Thank you for the help!

Could you please explain the bees wax process a little more in detail?

Do you melt the bees wax enough to cover just the top? Should I be

careful not to have the melted wax follow onto the side?

Thanks in advance!

You can just sprinkle some bees wax shavings over the top of the pickup, put the cover on tightly and heat it with a hair dryer. Press the cover tightly with your fingers until the wax cools, then solder the cover to the base.

Hello my name is Tomas.

I have similar question. I have Gibson Custom guitar and I decide change pickups ( 490r and 498t) in to Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 set. I just want to keep gold color of my hardware. Its possible to swap Bursbucker 1 and 2 covers (avaible only with german nickel silver) in to gold-plated covers ?

Make sure the spaces between the screw heads are identical.

(The neck pickup and the bridge pickup should have different

spacings, though)

I used genuine Gibson covers on my 496R/500T. I tried

aftermarket covers, but they didn't fit perfectly.

Great info, GOTW27 - thanks.
