midnight sun
What's are the sizes and how does one identify whether it's a 50's, 60's slim taper or in some of my Norlins, somewhere in between? There are those 60 slim taper that just easy to feel once played but I wanted to know how to measure and distinguish which neck the LP has. I have just reached my 40th Gibson collection and wanted to find out their neck sizes. Thanks.
rockstar232007
'50's Neck = Baseball Bat '60's "Slim-taper" = Broom Stick Inbetween = You can usually tell by the way it feels when you wrap your hand around it (ha ha that's what she said!). The '50s LP necks are very thick, while the '60's necks were refined to a thinner profile, to appeal to the general population (people with smaller hands), it also added confortability to the mix. As far as "inbetween"? It depends on who you ask, cause' some people will say the neck is thicker, and others will think it's perfect. Also, pay close attention to the neck heel, upon close inspection, you will notice that on LPs from the '50's (Fat Necks), the heel will usually be vary round, unlike the '60's, which will be slightly smaller. 80LPC
I have just reached my 40th Gibson collection and wanted to find out their neck sizes. Thanks. Measure them ! Use a dial gauge /digital caliper. Measure the thickness from the back of the neck to the surface of the fretboard. Take measurements at the 1st fret and 12th - which will also show the amount of taper. Be careful not to mark the finish with the steel caliper. I sometimes place a piece of paper over the back of the neck to protect it. Of course, you are really measuring the neck + fretboard thickness, but it seems to be the standard way.
midnight sun
Thanks 80 LPC. That is a good, concrete answer. So, what are the usual readings on different neck thickness? I've got an old Custom that's thicker than the newer 50's neck and a few Norlins that felt thinner than the 60's slim taper.
Tim Plains
'50's Neck = Baseball Bat'60's "Slim-taper" = Broom Stick Inbetween = :- '50s necks are not baseball bats. I'd say they're medium sized. Historic reissues...those have baseball bat necks.
chongo
Does anyone have the actual original specs on any of these necks? I see hemming and hawwing about baseball bats and such, but I've only seen a couple of places where the specs are published. What's up with that? C'mon, give with the numbers!
