scoid
Hi All, I'm looking at a 1961 ES-335 that has a "2" stamped in the headstock. Anyone know what that means exactly? I believe it indicates a factory second but I'm not sure. Any ideas about what kind of flaws would qualify as a second vs. being destroyed? ie; structural, finish, electronics, etc. Thanks, scoid
Shade
I guess the best thing would be to write gibson customer service... I read somewhere (but could be wrong) that the two indicates a lesser quality (for some reason) on this special instrument or was used for instruments that were given to employees (I think "factory 2" is the term for it)... But again... that could be wrong and I would advise to ask the customer service about it... Do you have pictures you could post here?
Sailjunkie
Yes, I'm pretty sure it means factory second, but don't fret...many factory seconds might have some small blemish somewhere in the finish...typically no big deal...
Josef1010
my Epi ES-175 is a 2nd, and I couldn't even tell you what the issue - I own 4 epi hollow/semi hollows and it is by far the best fit, finish, player - so the 2nd can be very subjective
iangibson
Gibson used to stamp guitars with minor cosmetic flaws "2" or "SEC" or "SECOND." As far as playability is concerned, they were no different from other straight-A guitars. I also heard that they labeled excess inventory as such so that they could sell them off to dealers at discount rates.
