Headstocks and.. pancakes!

Two questions for the people who kniow stuff:

1- when did the "big sized headstock" change to the regular one? Right after 1979 or were there big sized headstock till the middle 80s?

2-Pancake bodies: I need an instrument capable of doing jazzy stuff (early crimson fripp tone, pat martino tone exc) and biting distortions (black sabbath).

Do pancake bodies deliver more like dark tones for distortions and suck on clean respect to newer 90s and 00s les pauls ? I heard people saying that.

3- When exactly did they stop doing pancake bodies? What do the books say?

Thx again for sharing your wisdom, I really appreciate your answers.

The really big headstocks showed up on the SG's in 1971

My 72 SG200 is 3.5" at it's widest point, and the overall length to the nut is 7.25"

My 1980 LPC is the same length as the above and 3.55" at it's widest point

My 2009 SG fades is 3.07" at it's widest point and 6.85" in length.

But in total square inches my Epi Casino kills them all[blink] ....The HS is a monster

And in relationship to the overall length to the neck[blink] ..... It's almost 1/2 the length of the neck

All LPs from 1982 have the 9 weight relief holes - except for custom shop.

I've no idea at which point during '82 it was introduced. Gibson were not forthcoming about this process...

Suspicions were aroused when debris in the holes began to rattle like latin percussion [blink]
