JasonCO
Hey Guys, Looking at upgrading the wiring and hardware (yet to decide on PUPs) and I was looking at the stew mac wiring kits. Firstly has anybody had experience with these kits...how is component quality? Secondly can somebody tell me which pot size I need for my LP Custom so i dont have to pull it apart until i'm ready...long or standard shafts, also will my knobs fit onto these pots? Third has anybody done the JPLP conversion? good, bad, indifferent? Can the standard PUPs be split or do I need to replace. Thanks for your help Jason
carverman
That's a pretty basic wiring kit for $30 with garden variety ceramic disc caps. You can buy the individual pots/wire/ jack/switch and better caps, (sprague orange drops) for a couple of dollars more ($32), but it should be adequate. My Epi LP Custom uses standard shafts. RE:Conversion of standard hbucker wiring to four wire for coil splitting. It is "possible" to split out the standard hbuckers, (and I have done one to test a "theory"), but you have to be EXTREMELY careful not to break the internal connections on enameled copper wire inside (42 awg which is as thin (or slightly thinner) than a human hair. If you break the connection unravelling the tape around the coil to get at the joined connection between the N coil and S coil, you will need a good magnifier, and a way of scraping off the enamel on the broken end of the wire to resolder with a very tiny soldering iron tip. Not an easy job, and you have to be VERY careful with those tinywires. Some p_ups do have a stranded wires already soldered to those tiny ends. One of those wires will be soldered to ground along with the shield and the other two connected together on the outside of the coil, so the coils are connected to each other. In this case, you can connect to another piece of shielded wire and bring that out to get four wires. However, you will need to replace the original wire with a two conductor shielded wire as well.
