Pickup covers.

My Les Paul Standard came with them, and what exactly is their function other than protecting the pickups?

I heard that by taking them off, you get a higher output sound; is that true? And is that it?

I took the covers off my LPC stock pups, got a little brighter tone from them but no perceivable increase in output. It's really not worth the hassle to remove the covers and clean the wax off the pups. But I was bored........

The brass (non ferrous) covers are supposed to keep stray noises (like flourescent lights/radio waves)

from getting into the coils. Since the function of the pole pieces is to magnetize a portion

of the string above it, removing the covers isn't going to make that much of a difference

volume wise, but you may get more noise though.
