Epiphone EJ160E pick-up

Although I love this guitar, I have only one negative about the EJ160E - The Pick-up is very weak short of replacing it is there a reasonably priced pre-amp that would work great with it to go through a PA?

What strings are you using? Its a magnetic pup so acoustic strings won't work.

 

Damn them beetles, they do something stupid and 40 years later we are STILL paying for it.

I am using Electric strings, the output of the Pick up is just very weak.

What type of amp are you playing through? An acoustic guitar produces frequencies that an electric guitar amp just can't reproduce.

Going straight into a PA

Are you using a DI box? If not, there's your problem.

Used a Fishman, still extremley weak signal

What does it sound like through a guitar amp? Borrow one, rent one, steal one, or simply take your guitar to any music store that sells amps, & try one out. (Tube or solid state, just make sure it's an electric guitar amp, and not an acoustic/electric amp.)

it sounds fine through an amp, just not very good through a PA, very low output

The D.I. box should do it - I don't know why it doesn't work. You could try a "clean boost" pedal like the one Seymour Duncan makes, or you could use an amp & try miking it. The fact it sounds o.k. through an amp tells me there's nothing wrong with the guitar or pickup. I've never tried to run my EJ160-E through a P.A., but I have run it through a Peavey Ecoustic 112 acoustic amp, which has a passive/active pickup selector switch.
